Your / you're

If you want to say YOU ARE then it's YOU'RE. The apostrophe is taking the place of the A.

If you mean that a thing belongs to someone then it's YOUR / YOURS.

YOUR'E not going to believe how easy it is to wrap YOUR head around this very simple thing which makes people judge you when you get it wrong.

YOU'RE welcome! GrinGrinGrin

Unfortunately, OP, you have typed the apostrophe in the wrong place in your third paragraph, which rather detracts from your message! Grin

DadDadDad · 07/04/2021 09:25

Apart from letting off steam, do you think post is going to make any difference?

I've found myself making this mistake occasionally even though my spelling is good and I am perfectly aware of the correct usage. It's just on something informal like this forum, it's going to happen, and I've learnt to be more relaxed about the odd slip-up.

If I was doing it in reports at work or emails in a professional context, then I'd be more concerned.

PurpleDaisies · 07/04/2021 09:27

I’m judging you right now.

Seriously. What do you think this post is going to achieve? It might be simple for you but that doesn’t mean it is for everyone. Do you think people are deliberately making that mistake to piss you off?

And I cannot stand incorrect apostrophe placement Grin I suggest you climb off that high horse of yours op and have another look at what you've posted....
mn81987 · 07/04/2021 09:31

Make sure YOU'RE doing it right yourself first 🤣🤣🤣🙄🙄😳

TheSockMonster · 07/04/2021 09:32

Unfortunate mistake aside, I am with you OP.

That said, I do realise it’s petty, language evolves and autocorrect does horrible things!

EvilOnion · 07/04/2021 09:33

YOUR'E

The apostrophe goes in place of the missing letter. It's easy once you know. You're welcome Smile

Arsewipe.

PolarnOPirate · 07/04/2021 09:36

It irks me too but you must be a MN newbie if you haven’t realised that if you start a grammar police thread then your OP WILL include a mistake, guaranteed!

CateTown · 07/04/2021 09:36

MN needs an edit button as it's easy to make mistakes when typing on a device.

Auto-predict/correct spells words like Sundays as Sunday's which irritates me.

CateTown · 07/04/2021 09:40

And I think OP's mistake was deliberate Smile

TheVolturi · 07/04/2021 09:42

What the hell does it matter!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/04/2021 09:53

Sadly, OP, the sort of people who genuinely don’t know the difference and might actually like to know, are probably not the ones who’ll be reading this thread.

I’m sure you could have threads every week about its/it’s, there/their/they’re, who’s/whose, etc. (I wouldn’t bother with discreet/discrete, evidently a lost cause) but I doubt they’d make any difference.

LizBennet · 07/04/2021 09:54

Your/You’re doesn’t bother me that much, I can understand what they mean.
Alot is annoying, but again, I can understand.

Noone (No One) however irrationally bugs me.

brushlaptop · 07/04/2021 09:54

Aside from the mistake I'm with you.
So annoying when people get this wrong!!!

Ohdoleavemealone · 07/04/2021 09:56

I hate people making blatant mistakes like there/their/they're. It isn't hard but some poeople don't feel it matters.
I only comment on it if they are being a prick and putting others down.
For example a guy on facebook commented on a friends post correcting a spelling mistake. He wrote something like "your not very smart but we love you anyway".
I commented "you're. If you are going to correct someone elses spelling you should get your own post 100% correct don't you think???"

No response but hopefully he won't be such a prick next time!

Strangekindofwoman · 07/04/2021 09:57

Do you feel all superior now, OP?

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 07/04/2021 10:01

Get back in YOUR box. You can't feel good about criticising people for their misspellings, then fuck up YOURSELF! Kind of takes the steam out of YOUR argument.

PurpleDaisies · 07/04/2021 10:12

I hate people making blatant mistakes like there/their/they're. It isn't hard but some poeople don't feel it matters.

I’d be surprised if most people know.

Cabinfever10 · 07/04/2021 10:19

Whilst I accept that you may find this really annoying @NoLactose and @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER however many dyslexic people struggle with homophones.
I have spent decades struggling with them I've tried everything but still can't get there and their correct all the others I can now do including they're but there and their just won't stick.
So the next time you feel the need to "teach" people or talk about "the sort of people who need to be told " that we might not be able to retain the information no matter how many times people tell us and that you're being really offensive

Mousetown · 07/04/2021 10:19

My mum does this. Do you really think it is because she doesn’t think it matters? Or maybe it was something to do with dropping out of school as a teen when her mum died to look after her siblings? She doesn’t know what she doesn’t know.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/04/2021 10:26

Ha, @Ohdoleavemealone, I only ever corrected someone once - on a largely male forum with a lot of smart-arses - after he’d corrected someone else - and made a basic mistake in his own post.
Talk about pots and kettles.

The worst I ever saw, though, was on a specialist members’ forum where a lot of us had met up at some point.
One woman who evidently always fancied herself as intellectually superior, pointed out to someone else on the general forum (she could have sent a PM) that she’d used a Latin phrase incorrectly.

I’d never taken to that woman, but that really put the lid on it.

Kerb and curb annoys me.
The Google ad is wrong.

Don’t t get me started on there/their/they’re!

Someone's got to keep you on your toes 🤷‍♀️
