Plane noise near Ashford

LindaMum · 06/04/2021 20:44

Hello,
I was thinking of moving around Ashford but worried about plane noise. I have never been there so not much of idea about the noise level. I wanted to know, from someone who lives there, what is the plane noise level around Ashford train station within, let's say, 1 km radius.
Cheers!

Plane noise is not really noticeable, especially in the town centre, where there is normal traffic noise. I live outside of Ashford, so less traffic noise.
The noise I notice more on the outskirts of Ashford and around some of the villages is from the Eurostar and HS1 trains. It seems to carry more but there arent so many trains an hour but if you are wanting a quiet area, then that might be something to consider.

Meredusoleil · 06/04/2021 20:56

Do you mean Ashford in Middlesex (so near Heathrow Airport) or Ashford in Kent?

LIZS · 06/04/2021 20:57

Ashford Kent or Ashford Surrey?

MiddleClassProblem · 07/04/2021 10:10

Please come back and let us know which Ashford

Internetwanderer · 07/04/2021 14:18

Thinking about this, I think it must be Ashford in Surrey. I answered originally because I was surprised about someone thinking plane noise might be an issue in Ashford Kent, and wanted to reassure (and point out train noise as an alternative issue if the OP was wanting a very quiet environment).

AFAIK there is no Ashford in Surrey. The one I mentioned near Heathrow Airport, which I think is the one the OP is probably most likely to be talking about, is actually in Middlesex.
MiddleClassProblem · 07/04/2021 15:25

It’s actually Surrey and is Spelthorne and Surrey council.

Middlesex technically is no more. Most people refer to it as both though 🙂

I'm sorry but I beg to differ.

I live in Middlesex, so it most definitely does still exist. At least, as far as my address goes 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've just stumbled upon a thread elsewhere on MN that I think you started about 5 years ago in 2016! Don't know how to link to it, but perhaps it would help the OP (if they ever return to this thread)?
MiddleClassProblem · 07/04/2021 17:12

I’m happy to tell op about it, that’s why I asked to clarify it.
Some people do use Middlesex but technically it does not exist.
Middlesex is only used due to tradition really. I used to use it living in teddington even though technically it doesn’t exist. People still understand it though and many companies/sports teams use it. That’s all that I meant. Ashford is 100% in Surrey as that is county council.

LindaMum · 07/04/2021 17:49

Oh dear!
Yes it certainly the one near Heathrow airport. Sorry, I should have mentioned it.

Lol ok. So basically Ashford only gets a few planes going to North America every few days and it’s mainly the Ashford Common end. These are also planes that have taken off so they are much quieter than if under a landing flight path. By the station is not really under a flight path but obviously you can see them in the distance.

All in all, it’s much quieter plane wise than Richmond/Twickenham/Whitton.

Thanks. Yes you are right about flight to North America and I was also thinking along the same line. I also checked flight path and it seems to be ok.

As pp said I did a thread enquiring about the area I’ll link it below but many of the responses were quite down on the area. We visited it and it was lovely. We’ve lived here for 3.5 years and really like it. I had to commute to central London and I haven’t really socialised much in the area other than for sport but there are some nice local restaurants. Shopping in Staines is easy and accessible. It’s mixed with culture and class which is what I was hankering for having had some race related issues where we were. The high street has express type supermarkets for co-op, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. It also has a butcher, a bakery, library, a boots, Superdrug, two costas and a gregg’s. And most importantly, an ice cream shop...

The flights are every few days rather than daily, that go over and they are quite when they pass. It’s a lot quieter than other areas that are seen as naice.

Thanks, I did see that thread but after reading all I couldn't figure out what the conclusion was, hence decided to ask.

Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions

So basically Ashford only gets a few planes going to North America every few days and it’s mainly the Ashford Common end.

I suppose first point worth making for the OP is that at the moment departures are way down on what was and (hopefully) what will be.

Ashford shouldn't get overflown by any arrivals, but parts of it possibly get overflown by westbound flights any time the airport is using the easterly runway(s) for departures, which, because of prevailing winds in the UK less than half the time...

But, (big but) once traffic is back to normal and on the minority of days Heathrow is "on Easterlies" I'd expect a fairly continuous stream of departures for the whole day, not just the odd flight.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/04/2021 18:34

No, I’m basing that on what it was like pre Covid

MiddleClassProblem · 07/04/2021 18:34

Ashford itself is not under a flight path.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/04/2021 18:44

When I say a few planes, I mean, not a lot. Not a constant stream as they are only heading to one place and they are every few days not every day even at full whack.

worriedatthemoment · 07/04/2021 18:45

I lived there for a while , no real issues with plane noise but then I lived elsewhere on flight path and never noticed them after a while either .
Noisy parakeets in some parts though Smile

notimagain · 07/04/2021 18:49

@MiddleClassProblem

OK - I know the area and certainly the "flightpaths" shall we say reasonably well and I would certainly thought the Ashford common area might be vulnerable to some departure noise, especially if there's a strong easterly blowing, but I'll bow to your more local knowledge.
MiddleClassProblem · 07/04/2021 18:59

Ashford Common is about a mile from the station but it’s really not loud. But I do think it depends on where you have lived before and how much you can tolerate.

Fiddlersgreen · 07/04/2021 19:14

I used to live there and the plane noise wasn’t bad considering its proximity to the airport.
Only really heard the planes every few days and even then it didn’t seem like a lot were going over.
We moved around 5 miles further away from the airport but as we’re now under the flight path, we have a lot more plane noise than we did in Ashford.
That said, we’ve been here 4 years now and even pre-covid we barely notice them anymore
