Will permanent red hair dye become less intense?

I (stupidly) dyed my hair a very slightly different shade of box red hair dye as they didnt have my shade. I have done this before where I got a ever so slightly different shade of red from the same brand and it turned out no noticeable difference. This time however, it is bright pinkish almost. To clarify, I have very dark brown/black hair and box red dye just adds a subtle red tint to my hair normally. It is now noticeably more red at the roots (less so through the shafts of the hair) as I concentrated the applicated at roots for the greys.

Help please?

You can get colour-stripping shampoo. Or washing up liquid!

Wash it everyday over the next couple of days and it will fade. My friend dye’s hers red and at first it’s always really bright but does calm down

My sister in law is a hairdresser and she says head and shoulders makes hair dye fade really fast so she tells clients not to use it but if you are looking at fading it down it could be worth a try

@Umbivalent - will colour stripping shampoo make hair lighter or darker? I definitely want to go darker.

Washing up liquid?! Like Fairy etc..? what effect would that have

@DeeDee9898 - what colour is your friend's natural hair? I can imagine lighter hair thats dyed red losing the redness.. but mine is black, I don't want it to fade to a lighter red, I want it to go darker

Yes it will fade -red fades quite quickly in my experience. Wash daily, go out without a hat in the sun & rain etc.
Costs me a fortune to keep it vibrant 😄

It will take the red out. Washing up liquid does the same thing, I believe.

Red fades fast, just wash everyday with you're regular shampoo and it'll fade

mooonstone · 06/04/2021 19:35

Colour stripper will make your hair look ginger, you’ll have to dye over it to make it black again regardless. So I would say just skip that and dye it black.

Also, unfortunately your hair will always have the reddish tint as the black dye naturally fades. The dye has lightened your natural hair colour, similar to how bleach does. Your current root area will especially look bright.

Brad Mondo would be horrified that you did roots first!! 😱 (Wink)

Reds fade really quickly. I've been doing mine violets for a year but the vibrancy doesn't last long

ZenNudist · 06/04/2021 20:21

Don't use colour stripper it will leave your hair a funny colour and stink. For weeks. I recently used it on ds and it left his hair pink which was fine as the main aim was not to get excluded from school by having mad red hair but he likes the pinky colour.

Red does fade fast. I'd just wash everyday if you hate it. It's not easy to put colour over colour without using some kind of developer. Think you need a professional if you want to go darker.

To everyone saying red fades - I have died my hair (permanent box dye red) for years and I wouldn't say it fades. My hair is waist length and still has the red tint at the ends. I mainly colour my hair to cover greys (I'm in my early 30s, don't have loads of greys but enough to feel I need to do something about it - I guess its particularly obvious as my hair is so dark). The box red dye worked well as it covered the greys and gave a very subtle red tint which I liked.

I'm fluctuating between thinking I look like a clown and telling myself to brave it, its only a slight change but feels obvious to me.

How about dying some brown over it? Would that work?

You could try it on a little bit.

Jemenfouscompletement · 06/04/2021 21:31

Try Head and Shoulders often, it is excellent at removing hair dye

Cherrysoup · 06/04/2021 22:35

I’d get a very dark brown box dye, it might cover up the too red bit. I just dyed mine for the first time to cover increasing amounts of grey, I got the shade nearest mine but I can really see a difference. I’m quite fascinated, especially now that I can’t see any grey!
