Idead for Science experiments at home?

My son loves science. He gets really annoyed that they rarely do it at school.
We have done the coke and mentos/vinegar and bicard variations loads of time.
Has anyone got any ideas, that are easy, use household ingredients and safe but with big reactions to get them excited?

If you boil up purple cabbage the water goes purple and acts as an indicator dye. So it changes colour if you add it to acids (eg lemon juice) or alkali (eg bicarbonate soda)

This magazine might be good if you could afford a subscription- maybe a birthday present?

Thanks ladies!

Have you got any cornflour?

Add water until it thickens and it becomes a non Newtonian fluid.

Liquid when still but solid when moving

IggyAce · 06/04/2021 14:56

Oobleck is fun but a little messy. It kept my dcs entertained for a few hours during lockdown 1, we made it outside.

Google Marvin and Milo. Great little cartoons with experiments.

There is a great one with slime and static electricity.

WindyPudding · 06/04/2021 14:58

Steve Spangler science has loads of great ones.

Fizzgigg · 06/04/2021 15:01

Are you on instagram? If so follow @thedadlab. His whole feed is cool, easy science experiments. He has a good book too. We used it a lot.

DancesWithDaffodils · 06/04/2021 15:06

How old is he?

Tea light floating on water with a jam jar over the top - water rises as the candle burns.
Candle in bottom of a narrow-ish jar (you want about an inch gap) Shelled, hard boiled egg on top. Egg gets drawn into the jar.
Match head rockets.
Skittles density gradient.
Making honeycomb
White carnations or white daffodils or celery in coloured water
I cant get it to work well, but Fire Snakes
Rainbow bridges
Smarties chromatography
Ice cube icecream

GlumyGloomer · 06/04/2021 15:09

This one is good: learning.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/resources/instant-ice-cream/
Can't find the instructions at them moment but they use to do a sheet for soda snakes too (cone of sand, fill with icing sugar and bicarb, cover with strong alcohol and set on fire).
It's a bit less flashy but chromatography is nice (black ink dot on blotting paper suspended with the end in a glass of water). Permant ink doesn't work, different felt tops will separate differently so you can even do a forensic investigation type game.
Kiwi DNA is good too, although a bit of a faff.

GlumyGloomer · 06/04/2021 15:10

Please excuse the many many typos 🙈

GlumyGloomer · 06/04/2021 15:12

Cross posted with daffodils, fire snakes another name for soda snakes. I've seen some great ones, and some duds.

Holding an egg in the palm of you hand and squeeing it tightly. If you hold it right it will not break, no matter how hard you squeeze (do it over a bowl just in case). Assuming it works you can then put the egg in vinegar to make a bouncy egg.
The small candle in a saucer filled with water, and then put a jam jar over the top is strangely impressive to children and very easy to do

Ohdoleavemealone · 06/04/2021 16:04

Some great ideas thanks.

Hello Everyone,
I am a fellow teacher and blogger and currently blogging on Gosciencegirls.com.
We have recently published “100 Fun Science Experiments / Science Fair Projects for Kids” – that covers many science concepts that can be taught using simple experiments at home/classroom. Here is the link: gosciencegirls.com/100-science-experiments-for-kids/
I sincerely hope that this resource would help students to get ahead in STEM.
Happy Experimenting!
Thanks!
