My mum asked me to order something for her from the Easy Life website. In case you're not familiar with Easy Life, they sell stuff aimed at the older market - remote controls with huge buttons, extendable shoehorns, mobility aids etc. Anyway, mum isn't great with the internet and was having trouble so sent me the details to complete the order. There was a £4.99 delivery charge included.
The next day, I received an email, purportedly from Easy Life, saying that the £4.99 delivery charge had been added in error and giving me a link to click to qualify for my refund. Alarm bells were ringing and, sure enough, when I checked the email address that this had been sent from, it was clearly not real ([email protected]) .
My worry is that had my mum placed the order herself, she would have been fully duped by an email like this and I'm worried about other non-internet-savvy customers who may be taken in by this. It seems like a fairly sophisticated scam in that it recognises transactions through this particular website and therefore targets the elderly and vulnerable so if you know anyone who uses this site, please be vigilant.
In the meantime though, I feel uncomfortable about doing nothing (other than a MN PSA). Does anyone know if I can report this somewhere formally?
I should add that I'm not fully familiar with the rules here so if I shouldn't have mentioned the company name, please let me know and I'll report with more anonymised detail. I thought it was important to give full context here though and I'm in no way criticising nor blaming Easy Life.
