Mice - best way to get rid?

Can someone post a link to the best sonic plug thing they recommend. I have seen a mouse a couple of times (hoping just one!) and my humane trap no longer seems to work. In debating getting someone in to block any holes up or the sonic things. Any ideas as to the best way?

The ones I linked to are like this. Instant death.

Mice - best way to get rid?

Humane trap - the mouse is trapped and going nuts until you collect it, take it at least a mile away and release it where a predator wil probably get it, or it will struggle somewhere new.

Murder???? Jeez.

I had a mouse in my kitchen once, I made a tunnel out of taped together cardboard toilet rolls leading from where it was living down the side of a cupboard to the open back door, with a trail of cheese crumbs inside. Worked a treat and he never came back in Grin

@Ilovechoc12

I feel for you.

We had one mouse which turned into 68!!!!! Dead mice. That we counted !!!! So prob more than that. This was London though so prob worse .....

Get someone professional in - find out where they are coming in (ours a flat roof above the kitchen) they can get in 1/4 of a biro pen - tiny gap smaller than your finger nail

They love bom bom strawberry jam and chocolate....,

Get someone professional- before it gets bad. It took months for our place to be mouse free.

I’m now terrified of them or anything mouse like ....

Good luck xxx

oh im dying to know the story behind the 68 x

I had a sonic repeller in an old flat I lived in. Can’t remember the brand but it would have been a cheapish one from B&Q or Argos.

They hate the smell of peppermint, so you could try getting some peppermint oil and sprinkling it round. I ended up brewing loads of bowls of peppermint tea and leaving them on the floor near the walls 😂.

I’d only seen one and never saw it again after doing this. I also stopped using my food caddy as that’s what it/they were coming in for, even if I just scraped a few leftovers in from dinner. Had to double bag any food waste and put it in the main bin ASAP.

Keep your place scrupulously clean if you can. If they can't access food, crumbs etc, they won't stay.

Hollywhiskey · 05/04/2021 23:19

Don't use poison if you have pets or kids. We put down rat poison in a secure box and one of our animals was poisoned. The vet explained the rat carries the poison to the nest which is how it works, but they can drop it, so your pets or children can pick it up. My pet died but my kids were safe thank god.
Also if you use traps check them twice a day and be prepared to deal with injured animals. We had a rat caught in a trap by its leg which my husband had to kill quickly.
If you can, work out where they are getting in and block it up with wire wool. Clean all food leftovers. Keep all your food locked up and in glass jars and tins. Don't leave crumbs.

Seeingadistance · 05/04/2021 23:47

You could get a cat.

Merename · 06/04/2021 08:09

What do you do with them when you catch them alive?

Drive a few miles away to a sheltered area and set them free. May not be so logistically doable if we had 68 though, wow! We only had 3 or 4 in our last house, then like pp says kept kitchen scrupulously clean and no sign of any more.

Yes there are predators and it is dangerous to be a mouse but at least they have the chance to live, and I don’t live with the knowledge that I am one of the predators!

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/04/2021 08:13

I found a battery powered trap that electrocuted them, that was surprisingly effective and caught 2 in an hour. Baited with peanut butter. Easy to tip them straight in the bin without touching them. No more mice after that.

wetotter · 06/04/2021 08:24

I tried getting a terrier

It didn't work, she ignores them

Before the dog, I used to poison them. Which does mean you have to find their little corpses. But I just recoil from snap traps (convinced they'll get my fingers)

Now I get DH to do snap traps, but only if we can block off the area which needs doing from the dog.

Hi everyone,

I got a quote from the council to come and sort this out plus a guy to come seal the holes once they are sorted out. BUT a friend just said they really stink when dead so is there any solution to this? How long will this be for? The pest control will come back for 2 to 3 visits too but I'm wondering how bad it gets.

Having found a dead one this morning that was long past it's best, they do smell, but you can get bags that you can hang up that seem to neutralize the smell. I've hung a bag up and it seems to be helping already. I'll be honest, it was a bit grim, but you can't have them living with you. It's the first one we've found dead though.

Don't be scared. dh is a wuss when it comes to it, so I've dealt with it all, including their larger cousins who were even less welcome. It's been a trying year overall!

We didn't notice any smell at all so you might not either. Probably depends where they are though. Ours were in the roof and the walls!

@Merename

How are humane traps not humane - compared to murder?! OP, they need to be placed round perimeter of place poos/mice have been seen, and vary food inside. Peanut butter, chocolate and cheese spread have all worked for me. Then once caught put them in a box and go for a drive and they skip off to freedom. They are so cute! And then yes block up holes with wire wool.
It is not humane to go for a drive and drop them off. They are more likely to die in a strange area, they won't know where there is food or water, they won't know about predators, they might have a nest of babies "at home" who will now starve to death. If you don't check your "humane" trap every couple of hours the mouse will suffer due to lack of food and water.
Eesha · 07/04/2021 17:13

@OhYouBadBadKitten im guessing the council will put down bait boxes so my biggest fear is if there is a nest etc. Could you post a link to these bags?

@OhYouBadBadKitten thank you! Hopefully i won't need it

I wouldn't bother - read reviews on sites other than Amazon and you'll see that it is pure snake oil. Or rather mineral powder. Negatively charged....what a load of cobblers!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/04/2021 11:18

the negatively charged business is total bollocks! but it still does seem to absorb the smells. They are massive bags.
