Such an exciting topic but what is your monthly electricity bill? Ours is ridiculously high - I think- but nothing to compare it to!

Family of 4. I’m a sahm, dh works outside the home full time and we have 2 dc, 18 and 9. To be fair of course with Covid we’ve all been at home a lot more etc, devices streaming, stuff constantly on etc but even so... our monthly electric is now £150. Shock We do have the tumble dryer, dishwasher and washing machine going a lot - both myself and ds are disabled and there is a lot of washing related to this.

(We have gas central heating, £60 a month for gas).

I’ve switched to the cheapest tariff I can find. It still seems very high.

Just wondered what others were spending?

£102. No gas. 2 bed flat.

Mum2jenny · 05/04/2021 20:26

Gas and electric here is around £180 per month and it’s for 2 of us but my dh is currently wfh.

Myopinionrules · 05/04/2021 20:31

£85 per a month, 3 bed terrace, washer dryer, have a smart meter and worked out the dryer costs about 60p a load to dry

What are your unit rates?

Mum2jenny · 05/04/2021 21:41

But my dh loves heating the place to stupid temperatures

jessyjo2 · 05/04/2021 22:17

£38 per month set fee. 2 Adults 2 DS. Bungalow. Tumble dry most year round. Oven electric. However hob and heating gas.

Bagelsandbrie · 05/04/2021 22:22

Thank you all for your replies. There’s a lot of variety! Some of these seem so low for similar households. I agree all the gadgets with older children don’t help. And we do use the dryer a lot. 2 loads most days. Maybe even 3. Would love to dry more stuff outside but unfortunately the neighbours to the back of us seem to delight in smoking and having bonfires (!) so with my severe asthma it isn’t a good mix! Hmm. Lots to think about. Thanks all.

Unit price is 17p something per kw - pretty standard really. We were with sse and that was 22p per kw and now moved to OctopusEnergy so waiting to see if that makes any difference (the 17p odd is the price with octopus).

I suspect that running the tumble dryer 3 times a day is what’s doing it for you - I have one but rarely use it.

I do have a heated airer from Lakeland which is great and costs very little to run. Might be worth the investment?

LudoBear · 06/04/2021 08:10

£20 gas. £15 electric. Tiny 1 bed flat. Just me.

JackieWeaverFever · 06/04/2021 08:11

It's normal. Stop tumble drying everything

Our is 150 for 2 people (big house)

insancerre · 06/04/2021 08:14

4 bed detached
3 adults with DH wfh
We pay £145 a month for gas and electricity combined
It’s not the cheapest rate but it’s 100% renewable electricity
I don’t use the dryer- I hang everything on hangers in the spare room on an airer, over the bannister and on doors

BarbaraofSeville · 06/04/2021 08:23

Look at appliances etc that heat things and possibly lighting. That's what's pushing your bills up, WiFi and tech will use hardly anything in comparison.

Cooker, washing machine and dishwasher will use a bit, but probably not huge amounts. If you're spending £60 a month on gas, that probably means you don't have electric immersion heaters, underfloor heating or storage heaters, so it won't be any of those.

The biggies will be the tumble dryer and possibly the electric shower. Lighting if you have lots of old style inefficient spot lights (halogen I think). Some kitchens have half a dozen or more of those and they can add up to quite a bit.

4 bed house, 2 adults 2 children.
Was paying variable DD with Scottish Power, offered us a new tariff of £115 pm for gas and electricity. Went on MSE and found the cheapest switch to be Avro Energy £90 pm for dual fuel. I don't think its renewable power though but needs must. We changeover later this month.

GCH only goes on when it's really cold.
I boil a kettle of water to do the dishes.
Quick showers rather than baths.
I constantly go round switching things off.
Pleased I can now put washing outside now rather than straight in the dryer.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/04/2021 08:25

The national average for combined gas and electricity is around £100 a month, so you're using a typical amount of gas and 3 or 4 times the normal amount of electricity, to put into context.

Sexnotgender · 06/04/2021 08:25

So £210 all in? That’s VERY expensive.

My combined bill is £166.

Single glazed
4 bed
3 reception rooms
2 adult, 1 teenager and a toddler

Both adults work from home.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 06/04/2021 08:28

Ours is £80 a month combined, 2 adults & 1 child. No dryer but dishwasher and washing machine on most days. Both WFH but me.24 hours & DH part.time. I plotted our usage on a graph to compare year.on year (sad I know) and it did increase last year (obvs) but not a massive extent!

Marmite27 · 06/04/2021 08:30

£118 both gas and electric.

Single construction end terrace (so no cavity wall to insulate) and a dehumidifier running 24/7 to combat the damp. Tbf after 10 years it does occasionally get to optimum and turn off. Small children so the drier and heating are probably on more often than not.

2 adults working from home for the last year too. I don’t think it’s too bad.

Marmite27 · 06/04/2021 08:30

And a dishwasher too.

dementedpixie · 06/04/2021 08:32

I use about £80 electric per month. I dont have a tumble dryer. We have an electric shower, oven and use the washing machine and dishwasher at least once per day

Forgot to say; 2 adults and 2 teens, 4 bed detached in scotland
mealsonwheelz · 06/04/2021 08:41

£100 for a 5 bed house/family in it 24/7!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 06/04/2021 08:52

It averages at $100 per month, which is about 55 gbp, for a four bed house with two fridge freezers, tumble drier, dishwasher, air con and pool. Thank god for solar and Aussie sunshine! Everyone in WA also got a $600 rebate in November so I've paid zero since then. I do not miss UK power bills. On the other hand I pay LOTS more on water bills!

Purplewithred · 06/04/2021 08:54

We are with Ovo, and our online bit on their website lets us compare our costs with a similar sized household.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 06/04/2021 09:01

Two adults in a two bed terrace. Gas and electric combined is less than £60 per month. We're with British Gas.
