Tiny windfall!

LaMariposa · 05/04/2021 10:45

I have had a tiny windfall (around £100) thanks to closing an old savings account I’d forgotten.

What to do with the money though? If I transfer it into the joint account it will vanish on house expenses. But I’m not sure I want to fritter it on things for me either. Any ideas?

You could use it to freshen or update a room in the house - new rug or curtains or lighting perhaps, if needed. That way you can look at it remember that it was done with the help of your small windfall.
OR - buy yourself a simple piece of jewellery?
OR - open a new savings account and set up a standing order to add a little to it every month.

Lovely ideas, thank you. I don’t really wear jewellery, but maybe a new lampshade in the bedroom...

hmm lets see ;
save it till the restaurants are back in full and go and have a meal in your favourite one , you get a nice evening out and help the restaurant get back on its feet .

Buy a print / painting so you will have something to remind you of your windfall ( as pp said )

Put it towards a week end break

Def dont spend it on mundane stuff like bills and groceries

ohh something for the bedroom , and I dont mean a lampshade ! Wink

I'd withdraw it in cash and put it aside somewhere safe until you find something to deliberately spend it on - whether for you or the house, a day out when the world is more normal, a theatre ticket etc

SallyOMalley · 05/04/2021 11:04

Do you have a garden? I would buy some lovely plants which I could then enjoy for a few years to come.

Bunnybigears · 05/04/2021 11:09

I have just had similar as I sold something that was just mine originally (so not family money if you see what I mean) I now have £80 sat in a drawer so whenever I cant be bothered to cook I can buy takeaway without feeling guilty for the amount of household budget it is using up. Probably get 3 takeaways for the 4 of us out of that so I'm going to use them wisely.

toocold54 · 05/04/2021 11:18

What about clothes? Could you get yourself a new summer outfit?

BrilliantBetty · 05/04/2021 11:19

I found £50 in an old 'going-out' clutch bag.

I usually spend all my money on family stuff. But decided to use this to buy myself a very light, illuminating foundation from Chanel (more luxurious than I'd usually go for). It's made me look so much better and I feel much more presentable / myself. And it doesn't feel like there's anything on my skin.

By some premium bonds. I win on average £25 a month and reinvest the winnings in more bonds.

Someone bought my daughter 100 pounds' worth of premium bonds when she was born 12 years ago, and she hasn't won anything ever. I think it only really pays out if you have a lot of them.
BlackCatShadow · 05/04/2021 11:34

Us, too. We have several thousand in premium bonds but have only won 25 pounds once. Shock

I'd just stick it in an envelope and wait and see if if when the weather gets nicer something appeals. Just don't lose the envelope!

With a £100? Don't do this. How much do you hold to win £25 a month? (I have a large amount and still don't win every month!)

I agree with others - take it out in cash so it doesn't get swallowed up in family stuff. Then when you see something or want to do something you have it ready.

midsomermurderess · 05/04/2021 11:59

I did start with more than £100 to be fair, but seems like I have also been quite lucky.

LaMariposa · 05/04/2021 12:34

Hidden cash is a good idea, I’ve nowhere to spend it at the moment but a meal out with my sister next month would be something to look forward to. Definitely not going to let it go on bills.

Shoes
Handbag
Jacket
Something to 'invest in yourself"

TheSandgroper · 05/04/2021 16:24

New knickers and bras can be an excellent investment.
