Egg rolling?

My husband just saw a picture of a Scottish politician rolling eggs with his children in the park. He had no idea what was going on. He is English and we live in England but I am Scottish. We always did this as kids (though I must admit I found it a bit underwhelming so didn’t think to pass it on to my son as a family tradition Grin).

I’ve just realised I have never heard another parent mention it down here- do people roll eggs in England it is it a Scottish thing?

What about Ireland?

I always did it I'm Scottish, husband never heard of it, he's Irish.

Also Scottish and used to do it
Paint your boiled egg and go and roll it down a hill
Very symbolic Grin

I got my DDs to decorate eggs yesterday and took them rolling. DH thought I was mad.

I'm from South London. DH is from Yorkshire. However I spent many Easters in Scotland... Where I learnt egg rolling...

Our school has an egg rolling competition every Easter (pre covid). We're in SE London.

SaintReatham · 05/04/2021 10:50

yes! Pace egg rolling was something we used to do with my granda: hardboil the eggs/dye them with onion skins, and then roll them downhill. Whoever had the egg that didn't crack 'won'. And then we ate them.

We never did egg rolling but we did crab racing. Paint a crab and race it down the slipway. Cancelled for the last couple of years but normally very good fun.

VerbenaGirl · 05/04/2021 10:54

We did it when DC were younger, but come to think of it, we were introduced to it by a friend whose DM is Scottish. It was always lots of fun.

How funny! What country are/were you in @MoonfacedMilksop?

Looks like lots of Scottish /Scottish connected people confirming that they do it but so far nobody without Scottish connections, English people probably aren’t even clicking on the thread because the title is probably gibberish to them...

We roll them here. NE England. Saw a couple of families out yesterday doing the same.

MissisBee · 05/04/2021 19:19

It's a thing here in NI. I've always thought of it as an Easter Monday activity, don't know if that's actually correct 😂

I am English, only ever done egg-rolling when staying with cousins in Scotland, I've always assumed it was a Scottish thing.

Crikeyblimey · 05/04/2021 19:28

It’s a big thing in Lancashire (presumably not this year cos of COVID) there’s a lovely park with a good hill in Preston that has a big gathering of egg rollers each Easter.

When I was little we always made pace eggs and rolled them in our garden.

DustOnTheWind · 05/04/2021 19:31

I'm Scottish and familiar with the concept but I've never actually done it or known anyone else to do it.

Terriblecreature · 05/04/2021 19:31

Yes, I did when I was little and have now done it with my little boy (he has only just turned 2 but have done it the last 2 years with him) he thinks it's great. We hard boil the eggs, decorate them then find a good hill to roll them. I am Scottish fyi

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 05/04/2021 19:33

People were doing it in the park behind my house yesterday - SE England
It's not a big thing though, around here, that I'm aware of.

aretherereally4Hs · 05/04/2021 19:38

We used to do it with my children's nursery when they were younger- 10 years ago. They all decorated eggs and then flung them down the hill!! We're in the east of England
