How long do you think you could not go to the supermarket?

How many days do you think you (or whoever does the shopping) could manage without going? It's just me and DH.

Due to long running furlough and limited funds, I thought I'd see what I could do. Pre-covid I was a lazy planner and used to go for small (but relatively expensive!) shops every couple of days. Lockdown has forced me into going once a week and now I have a proper freezer too.

I'm going to try 2 weeks. I haven't especially shopped for this, the fridge is not full to the gunnels but the freezer is around half full. Dry store about average. No takeaways allowed.

Shite, I just thought about milk Grin

We shop oce a week. I menu plan and base the shopping list on the next week's menu and whatever basics are running low when I check the cupboards.

I like to have loads of tins, dried foods and a well stocked freezer so I could last for weeks in a zombie situation or a sudden need to self isolate but it would be depressing not to have fresh fruit and veg or chilled food like yogurts or houmous.

BeyondMyWits · 04/04/2021 20:55

Haven't been in a supermarket since 2006. Home delivery here. But if that was not available we have a freezer, and a decent larder, so probably a month, though the last week would be a bit boring... cereal, pasta/rice and frozen veg sort of thing.

Ghostlyglow · 04/04/2021 20:56

I've been inside a supermarket maybe half a dozen times in the last year. I have an online delivery once a week.

swampytiggaa · 04/04/2021 20:56

Me and the husband are both in one daily. We each work in one 😂😂 I have to be really strict with myself as it’s too early to spend £5 or so each day on crap basically.

speakout · 04/04/2021 20:58

Strange question.

Meals would be good for a week, two weeks acceptable. We would then be digging into frozen and canned food, Would survive for 4 or 5 months, but vitamin C would become an issue without fresh stuff,

swampytiggaa · 04/04/2021 20:58

Oh and I have a weekly shopping delivery. There are 7 people in my house so we get through a lot of food...

BogRollBOGOF · 04/04/2021 21:00

About 10 days (no top ups) We use long-life non-dairy milk anyway.

We could go longer, but it gets harder to cater for 4 and a balanced diet would be compromised.

Bagelsandbrie · 04/04/2021 21:01

I am useless at this. I can’t go more than 2 days before going in somewhere for fresh bread. It’s my absolute fave thing and bread that’s been frozen or a few days old just doesn’t do it for me.

laughoutquiet · 04/04/2021 21:03

I'm kind of hoping it might help our waistlines too.

There's only two of us, and I bought two 4 pint filtered milk on Friday so I reckon we could go 3 weeks with what's in and what we've got in the freezer.

Filtered milk lasts wayyyyyyy longer even when it's opened. My Dad is a widower and it's taken me 5 years to get him to buy it but now he's a convert, only he doesn't like the way it pours from the bottle (Cravendale take note on your 2 pint bottles 😂)

Twizbe · 04/04/2021 21:04

At the start of the first lock down I went to a fortnightly shop.

I used my freezer loads, planned every meal, rationed food and got in a few treats for along the way.

A slow cooker was important to my plans, as was making one meal last 2 nights.

6 adults here. At the moment, I could maybe feed everyone a proper meal for 3 or 4 days. I usually shop once a week on a Monday, so I am feeling quite pleased to think I could eek things out for a few more days. When the first lockdown began, I changed from one shop a week to one shop every 10 days or so, but found that a challenge if I am honest. I was glad to go back to once a week. I already make my own bread, have stocks of flour, freeze milk, and have quite a lot of storage and freezer space, but it is hard to keep fresh stuff longer than 10 days.

QueenPaw · 04/04/2021 21:16

I think I did 5-6 weeks at the first lockdown as I couldn't get a delivery and was shielding. Ran out of milk and had some strange meals!
Reminded me why I always have stocked cupboards and now I make sure to have extra UHT milk too

RomainingCalm · 04/04/2021 21:19

Probably up to two weeks for ‘proper’ meals, and 5-6 weeks in a zombie invasion situation, eating plain rice & HP sauce by the end of it.

GrinGrinGrin This would be us except that it would be pasta with chutney as the new breakfast!

Our shopping habits have changed massively over the last year. We used to 'top up' every few days, do a big Sainsbury's shop and then end up throwing food out when our plans changed. Looking back I am horrified at what we wasted and I've sworn never to go back to that.

We now meal plan and have a weekly delivery. Yes, there might be a quick dash to the local shop if I've forgotten anything but definitely don't want to go back to 'pop out for milk and spend £32'.

ceilingsand · 04/04/2021 21:20

I could maybe manage a couple of week but fresh veg would pose a problem. I often go 4 or 5 days then try to see how far I can get after that, especially on a Monday. I have a bread maker so that helps. I'd be annoyed without yogurt but I suppose I could make it, but I'd need milk in the freezer.

LittleBearPad · 04/04/2021 21:23

Milk would be a problem and bread but this is mainly because the freezer is currently rammed with stuff that was about to go off and then takes ages to come out again. If the milkman can come 😁 we could easily survive 10 days I think.

laughoutquiet · 04/04/2021 21:24

@RomainingCalm yes it's that "popping out for..." that I want to bash on the head.

Haven't been to a supermarket in over a year.
CEV and had shopping delivered. Actually I have done online shopping since it started. I live miles from any shops so am used to being well stocked and have two big freezers. Butcher and farm shop in next village deliver meat, veg and bread.
Without any shopping we could easily last a month.

newmumwithquestions · 04/04/2021 21:41

We had to isolate for 2 weeks unexpectedly 1st lockdown and whilst calorie wise we could probably survive for months, food was very limited by the end. Milk and vegetables were the hard bits. We were on frozen peas and sweetcorn, was very glad when we could stock up on fresh veg.

Hoppythehippo · 04/04/2021 21:47

4-5 days from right now. With advance notice and planning, a week to ten days. With the exclusion of numerous things we use a lot of but could technically not starve to death if we didn’t have (milk, fruit, salad veg, sliced cold meat), we could probably eat a nutritious diet from the cupboards and freezer for at least three- four weeks. I’d have some very very upset and unhappy children though!!

35andThriving · 04/04/2021 21:48

I reckon about 2 months. We're a small family and have 2 freezers, lots of rice, pasta and tinned fruit and veg. We'd be fine.

SusannaMorvern · 04/04/2021 21:51

I could manage a month maybe, but if I had to feed DH and DD then probably 3 daysHmm
