Jet wash are we being ripped off?

Posting here for traffic. We have a static caravan at a parkdean site. Each spring we pay £65 to have it jetwashed. Sometimes it's covered in green scum this year not so much depends on the winter. I think they may have convinced dm this is a good deal. Other van owners do their own. I've never had a jet washer before. I've told dm after this one I'm researching this properly. Dm is in her 70's but dp and I can do the physical work.
Assuming I need the actual jet washer and a hose to run off the tap. The jet washers I can see range in price from £60 upwards.

Should we buy one? Which is better? Or no it's easier to pay someone?

I'm lost but hopeful!

Depends on how much you’d use a pressure washer machine. If it’s just for the caravan once a year then it’s probably easier to just outsource the job. Can you not ask one of the other caravan owners that you’re friendly with whether you can borrow their machine to test whether it’s worth getting?
I love pressure washing stuff but the novelty does wear off quickly and it hurts your hands/arms too (but my machine is very powerful)

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 03/04/2021 12:42

Sounds like a good deal to me. Being able to do it yourself cheaper just saves the cost of labour.

MargaretThursday · 03/04/2021 12:45

I like jet washing. It's very satisfying.
But you end up pretty wet and dirty. I normally do it in bare feet and shorts and, on a really bad patch, I can end up looking like I've black boots on. Grin

I would say I don't think £65 sounds ridiculous for an annual good job, but I don't know.

Unless you will use it elsewhere personally I’d just pay, seems a good price and it’s a mucky job.

CricketClub · 03/04/2021 12:50

Bearing in mind it costs £10-15 a go just to get my car washed - £65 to get rid of months of green scum off a static caravan sounds like a bargain.
How much time do you have to spare? If time is no issue then DIY.
If, like me, the last thing you want to do is spend half a day cleaning a static then pay someone to do it.
Consider the fact that the person who 'professionally' cleans them is unlikely to use a £60 pressure washer and will have a much better and more expensive one.

Buy some Wet And Forget. It’s ph neutral and prevents the growth of moss or algae in roofs. Apparently they use it on the Sydney opera house roof. You can spray it on roofs, conservatories, paths, shingle style stones, garden ornaments, the lot. Have a google.

You can buy it at QVC U.K. I had the one for keeping your shower clean and it really works. I’ve bought the outdoors one I’m talking about now, I think it was £50, but have not used it yet. I wouldn’t have bought it if I didn’t think it would work.

You just keep pets away from paths etc youve sprayed till it dries. And don’t spray on plants or anywhere near ponds, cover those.

If they don’t have it in stock just now keep looking as it will come back in again. You get a 60 day try it guaranteed with no quibble returns. You’d think you’d surely see some progress in that time. You just pay the return postage costs if it’s not what you expected. I’ve done that many times with cosmetics and the money is refunded to my account no bother.

Thanks everyone - they do the job but sometimes it's not great.

I've got time to do it and I don't mind the mess.

Thinking about the machines is very pertinent though - I could go the circa £150 machine if that's any good - I'm assuming the £60 isn't.....

If I had the machine I would use it for other stuff definitely

I got a jet washer in Aldi for £60 I think, worth looking at that, but it’s not the strongest pressure!

PS You can buy a jet washer from qvc that runs out of a bucket of water so you don’t need a hose and tap, if that helps. I can imagine that would be useful for those in flats trying to wash mountain bikes or cars in the street etc. It’s not cheap though.

I think I need to stop watching QVC and get a life lol! Grin

Barneybear11 · 03/04/2021 13:04

I got a mini karcher last year for £70 ish pounds. It’s great.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 03/04/2021 13:06

£65 seems really reasonable to me!

mayneedabiscuit · 03/04/2021 13:20

£65 for someone else to do it sounds reasonable.
I've got a Karcher pressure washer that cost under £100 - it didn't last long and can't be fixed.

cooldarkroom · 03/04/2021 13:55

They presumably do the roof too. So would need a ladder. They may wipe the windows... You also may need an extension lead, A hose, & Gardena type hose attachment...

You can also rent karchers for about £20 a day, (there may be a half day price)

Bluntness100 · 03/04/2021 14:20

I would not recommend wet and forget, I bought it once and it did nothing for me.

nevernotstruggling · 06/04/2021 19:09

Thanks everyone. I think doing it ourselves might be more stress than it's worth!

I just paid someone to jet our small decking for first time. We have a pressure washer but it's a faff..the pressure is poor, you get soaked and filthy. It starts fun, but not for long.

Tommika · 06/04/2021 19:26

You need the pressure washer, plus access to a hose & power

Take care with the pressure at first as the power can be strong - stand too close with a narrow stream and you’ll be removing paint.

Another thing to consider is a caravan cover, so while stored it’s not exposed to the elements

Fluffandbubbles · 06/04/2021 19:41

If you’re up for the physical effort and grime then why not hire a pressure washer and give it a go ..or even better borrow a friends ? You’ll soon know if its a job that you don’t mind repeating or if it’s one you think its worth paying professionals for.
