Putting your name on the front door of the house.

I’ve just found out today this is a Scottish thing and the rest of the U.K. doesn’t do this. We all (well most of us) have little nameplates on our front doors that have our surname, occasionally first initial(s) of the adults living in the house.

Is this really just a Scottish thing? Do you guys in England / Wales / N. Ireland (or indeed anywhere else in the world) not have them?

I assumed it was standard to have a wee gold plaque on one's door inscribed with the residents name, until I discussed it with my Welsh husband who simply didn't believe me !!

I've never seen it in Scotland, I'll have to look next time I'm there!

The letter boxes on the side of the road in Finland are very noticeable and often miles away from the actual houses, down a single track road. People must drive miles for their mail in rural areas.

I'd never seen it in England. I moved to Scotland about 10 years ago and was quite surprised by it. It's still pretty common, too.

I've seen it but not in our (Victorian) block, usually in older properties

Potential issues with dodgers/stalkers I would think.

People in Sweden often have the clump of separate mailboxes for a street too and parcels are not delivered to flats/houses but to a random shop.

I only ever saw this in Scotland but in blocks of flats - it fascinated me as a child (from England).
