Clothes for people in 30s

Trying to purchase some new clothes but honestly can’t find a thing online that I like.

I’ve looked at places from ASOS, to Zara, to fat fat face, h and m, marks, phase 8.

It’s just all a bit much....as in everything is a bit OTT for my taste.

I’m 36, I like jeans and T-shirt’s, I like a checked tied together, I like a denim skirt with tights, I like my converse. So that’s the sort of clothes I wear. I don’t have much need for smart clothes but would be happy to try chinos etc. .

Am I just massively unfashionable and that’s why I can’t find anything?!

Where do other 36 year olds (ish) shop?!

Have you looked at TU, Asda & Tesco?

I haven’t but actually did used to buy a lot from TU! I think maybe it’s because I’m mainly looking online.

I’m 35.
I love GAP, H&M, Zara, Benetton, Esprit and Next.

If I have a bit more to spend I like Tara Jarmon, Rinascimento and Maje.

Thanks there’s a few places I haven’t tried!!!

Think I need to adjust to the fact that what I wore in my twenties is no longer ‘in’.

Dorothy Perkins mainly
It's so so shit thatb they've closed their shops 😭😭😭

HugeAckmansWife · 02/04/2021 16:10

Uniqlo? Cos?

BIWI · 02/04/2021 16:12

I wasn't aware that clothes or shops had to be specific to 36 year olds Hmm

You buy what you like, what fits and what you can afford from anywhere you can easily access.

HTH.

ScarfaceCwaw · 02/04/2021 16:14

I like Cos, Arket, &OtherStories, Kin at John Lewis.

countdowntonap · 02/04/2021 16:15

Someone on here referred me to Otrium last week, and I received a huge order from them yesterday with only two items I wanted to return. I mainly purchased their items from Whistles, Scotch and Soda, and Sandwich.

ScarfaceCwaw · 02/04/2021 16:16

Oh, I also like Jigsaw and I buy basics and trousers from Boden at times.

Nameregretter · 02/04/2021 16:32

@BIWI I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be interested in clothes people your are wearing. In my 20s I dressed in mainly Topshop, New Look, Oasis, Warehouse and Primark. Now I’m 34 with 2 kids and I find the majority of stuff from those shops is too “young” for me, plus I’m not prepared to put up with crap quality anymore.

OP now I shop mainly in COS, Uniqlo, arket.

Nameregretter · 02/04/2021 16:32

*people your AGE are wearing

Not super helpful at all, but you got your grumps out so thats something.

folloyourarro · 02/04/2021 16:41

Gap and Abercrombie are my go to for basics.

midsomermurderess · 02/04/2021 16:43

I'd recommend Cos too. Things can look a bit odd on the hanger but very different on.

StuntCroissant · 02/04/2021 16:48

I'm 34 and shop mainly at J Crew (for T-shirts and jeans), Sezane (for blouses and nicer tops), Arket, Zara, Jigsaw, H&M, &Other Stories

MayIDestroyYou · 02/04/2021 16:53

If you prefer very plain and simple, unadorned, non-fashion-y clothes you may like Community Clothing - good in all sorts of ways.

I haven't recommended Toast to anyone in ages, but they also manage that rather dated retro look, though at a higher price than you've indicated you'd want.

No. Not about grumps. Just picking up on insidious ageism.

Really you weren’t aware that 17 year olds and 87 year old generally don’t buy the same clothes from the same shops?! Grin

I mean, I agree people should buy whatever they want and I love to see people with unique style.
If you’re one of those people, all power to you and I wish I had the style and confidence to carry that off.......

Unfortunately though that’s not me. Let’s not pretending that there isn’t GENERALLY a difference in what people in their late teens/early twenties wear and what people In their late thirties wear. Clearly everyone else understood exactly what I was looking for as I’ve been given some great suggestions.

I’m thinking GAP is doing it for me. Hadn’t remembered gap as a place to look.

@BIWI what was ageist?

Do you not think that people of similar ages often wear similar style clothes? Not seen a teenager in an M and S beige clad length skirt yet.

AIMD · 02/04/2021 17:15

Not ever heard of cos Uniqlo or community clothing so great to check them out.

I am happy to spend more so long as they are items that will last like jeans or things well made.

I'm more intrigued by the OP's apparently unusually restrictive tastes and shopping habits.

As long as no one tries to tell my ancient self where I may and may not shop ...

AIMD · 02/04/2021 17:21

@MayIDestroyYou I am actually happy to try most things I just don’t feel like I know what to try that will suit me. Also I’m not much into fashion so tend to stick to staples likes jeans.

OP posts:
mamaduckbone · 02/04/2021 17:27

Have you tried weekday? If you look past the painfully trendy models the cuts and fabrics are really nice.
Also John Lewis Kiin range.
I must admit I often buy from White Stuff because their sizing fits me but avoid the really patterned floral stuff.

MayIDestroyYou · 02/04/2021 17:28

Everyone's different! But you can't just know what will suit you without experimenting. This can even mean making mistakes, or wasting money on something that just doesn't work for you even after you've tried.
