Depends on your job and how you feel!

stevematekatemate · 01/04/2021 20:52

I worked to 38 weeks.

It’s a baby, not the plague.

WeatherwaxLives · 01/04/2021 20:53

Do what you want, it's up to you. I planned to work until 4 weeks before due date but ended up getting stress migraines so went sooner.

Do you mean working in a high risk role?

You can work right up to due date but if you're in a high risk role you may need to either change duties or location.

I worked to 37 weeks in a call centre, would have worked till due date but was induced at 37.5 weeks due to GD.

ScarfaceCwaw · 01/04/2021 20:53

Do you mean because of Covid, or just generally?

Rillington · 01/04/2021 20:53

I worked until I was 37 weeks. My Dd came 27 hours after I went on maternity. Who said you shouldn't be working?

HamFisted · 01/04/2021 20:53

Who told you this and why? Is it a COVID thing?

Belleende · 01/04/2021 20:54

There is no general rule. Unless you are a hod carrier or have a similarly physical job or have underlying risks or complications of pregnancy, there is no reason why you cant work up until the baby comes out.

Fireweeds · 01/04/2021 20:54

Depends who told you and in what context. If you’re patient facing NHS, then at present there are Covid rules saying you should finish at or before 28 weeks.
If you’re desk based/ wfh or low contact I don’t see why you couldn’t work beyond 28 weeks.
If your consultant is suggesting stopping at 28 weeks for medical reasons, then I would listen to them.

WeatherwaxLives · 01/04/2021 20:54

Unless of course you do some sort of job that your employer has risk assessed isnt ok past 28 weeks and there no alternative work.

UrsulaBee · 01/04/2021 20:54

Most working mothers are still in work at 30 weeks

Persipan · 01/04/2021 20:55

Is there something specific about your job that you haven't mentioned? I think I worked up to 37 weeks, and I could perfectly well have gone longer.

Griefmonster · 01/04/2021 20:55

Depends on your job and on your pregnancy. Are either high risk? Who has told you? Medical professional responsible for your care or your boss or a random person?

CormoranStrike · 01/04/2021 20:55

I’ve heard that teachers have this option - not sure if it’s true.

I worked to 32 weeks and believe that’s average.

LeroyJenkinssss · 01/04/2021 20:56

If it’s because of covid then I’d take advice from your midwife. Otherwise the choice is yours and they can’t force you to go on maternity leave till (I think) 35 weeks but check that. I worked to 39 weeks for my first and 38 for my second (with planned c-section at 39 weeks) and do a fairly manual job

cheesebubble · 01/04/2021 20:56

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and working until 37, it's up to you. You can take Mat leave from 28 weeks.

AmandaHoldensLips · 01/04/2021 20:57

I turned up at the hospital with my work bag and said, hello, I'm here to have a baby. Baby arrived about 5 hours later.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 01/04/2021 20:57

Most people I know work to at least 36 weeks. Why would you stop unless you needed to?

SingingWaffleDoggy · 01/04/2021 20:57

You can work as long as you like but it’s advised to complete a risk assessment to lessen your risk. This may mean adapting practise at work (eg private office, not using communal facilities), working from home or if this is impossible you may need to go on leave earlier. I’m
36 weeks and still working in the NHS in a non patient facing role in the hub so it can be done.

JanewaysBun · 01/04/2021 20:58

If you are safe to continue then I would do so. Being at home, pregnant and waiting for baby is booooooring

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/04/2021 20:58

As a coal miner? No.

WFH hotel bookings? Yes.

Confused
Poppins2016 · 01/04/2021 20:59

Depends on the context... I worked until I was 39+3 with my last pregnancy, but it was pre-covid and I had an easy pregnancy and a desk job.

This time around I'm planning to do similar, but I don't work in a high risk field and can socially distance if I'm in the office (mostly work from home these days).

Dentistlakes · 01/04/2021 20:59

I worked up until the day before both my children were born, but I had an office job so it wasn’t physically demanding. A lot depends on how you feel. Everyone’s different.

I worked until 37 weeks, thought that would be around average, wanted more maternity leave with my baby than beforehand. Guess it can depend what sort of job you do and how your pregnancy is going?
