Worry about pill failure

kayakingmum · 01/04/2021 19:59

I'm taking Microgynon 30 correctly but worry about getting pregnant after reading a few posts on mumsnet about pill failure.
I don't think I could have an abortion but wouldn't want to keep it either.
I understand it's 99% effective. I've been on it for a few years without problems.

Am I worrying unnecessarily or not?

Yes I think you are over thinking things.
No contraception is 100% there is always a tiny chance that you could fall pregnant. The only sure way not to get pregnant is to not have sex!! But on the pill, the risk of pregnancy is small. There are other forms of contraception that are more riskier.

I know how you feel Kaya, I started it a few weeks ago and feel fine side effects wise, but a quick search on here made me feel we. Was taking such a Unreliable form of contraception, when all I’m trying to do was be safe. and should rethink, But as a pill side-effects wise I like it. so wouldn’t want to ideally change it. I am aware that it is a small proportion of people on here, but that seemed to be so many people who have got caught on it that I ended up worried. I am going to use a backup method with it as well to be doubly sure

It's unlikely you'd get pregnant but it's not absolutely impossible. Would you consider a method with a lower failure rate? Maybe implant? Look up Pearl index to find tables of each method's effectiveness rates.

If taken correctly, it statistically has the same Failure Rate as the implant does. So technically, we shouldn’t be worrying about things. It’s the amount of people on here that say that they’ve got pregnant having taken it exactly as directed that’s freaked us out I think... rationally, I think used with a method, condom, it would be highly unlikely to fail right? Secondly, I guess if it was that in affective the NHS would not be still prescribing it

Correctly means every day of the 21 at about the same time, not trusting it if you have been sick or had diarrhoea or taken certain meds. You could always use a condom as well.

Faith50 · 01/04/2021 22:51

I have been using the pill for nearly 30 years. The only time I have fallen pregnant is when I was trying to - even then it took some months. Taken correctly the pill is very effective- same time every day, take an extra pill if you have been vomiting or had diarrhoea. Follow the instructions and you greatly reduce the likelihood.

I think most if not all of the time when people say it was a pill failure, what they really mean is 'user failure'.

If you are that anxious then you should also use condoms.

Is using condoms as well as taking the pill an option? This is what I do as pregnancy would be really not great for us at the moment.

Elieza · 01/04/2021 23:22

No form of contraception is 100%

There is always risk.

Adding condoms would lessen the risk and protect you from stds and hpv.

If you have sickness or diarrhoea don’t have sex until whenever recommended by the pill leaflet. If you have sex using condoms only they are not as effective as the pill.
