If not Terry Pritchett, then who...?

Posting here for sheer traffic.

I am a desperate woman. I know there's a HUGE fan base here so please please help.

I read and listen to TP Discworld audio books almost constantly - when cooking, cleaning, walking and driving to work.

I'll always be his No.1 fan but I wouldn't mind branching out.

I've read Neil Gaiman.
Have tried to get into The Red Rising series (recommended by a friend) and I simply can't resonate with it at all). And that's the issue - Sir T was just an incredible observer and iconic writer of human traits and falling in love with his characters has truly stunted me from exploring others.

What can I move on to?!

Help!

@Chemenger

Jasper Fforde? The Thursday Next books are very funny. I'm not so keen on his others.
I agree. Loved his Shades of Grey one though. He's such a clever writer, and has the similar feeling to TP

@YoureAllABunchOfBastards

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch.

He is a huge Pratchett fan and so if nothing else you'll love the throwaway references

I second @YoureAllABunchOfBastards, the series is fantastic.

Another vote for Rivers of London here.

Love loads of these as a fellow Pratchett addict (met him once, high point of my life pretty much). Have carefully made a note of lots of others.

Echoing the Naomi Novik Temeraire series - they're wonderful.

teawamutu · 01/04/2021 21:14

Paul Hoffman's Left Hand of God trilogy is gory but fun. Great characters.

imnotalpharius · 01/04/2021 21:25

@AbsolCatly I was going to mention the Myth Inc books, they're quite fun.
I like David Eddings, like a warm comfortable blanket, not too stretching.

I've really enjoyed some of Simon R Greene's books, I love Hawk and Fisher, The Blue Moon stuff and the stand alones. His Nightside detective series is great as well, but I've never tried his sci fi Deathstalker stuff.

There's also a woman who narrates some of the earlier witches books - can't abide them, despite the Witches being amongst my favourites.

Celia Imrie I think. She's good in lots of things, but not this - the voices just don't sound right. Also Wyrd Sisters has big chunks of repeated material that were mentioned in reviews years ago but are still in the audiobook.

Can I ask - what accent does nanny ogg have? I’ve been reading Tiffany aching books to my son and I don’t know how she should sound. I felt I did, but it didn’t work out. Welsh??

AnneFuckingKirrin · 01/04/2021 22:04

I imagine her to have a Cornish accent.

BlackAlys · 01/04/2021 22:04

No, as a Welsh woman myself, I don't hear Nanny as a Welsh lass.

Yourkshire perhaps?

This is a great question actually 🤣

Placemarking.

schroeder · 01/04/2021 22:11

No-one can replace Pratchett, but for comic fantasy you could try Robert Rankin and Paul Magrs along with Tom Holt and Jasper Fforde as already mentioned.

milinhas · 01/04/2021 22:12

I would suggest Diana Wynne Jones (she was in fact a friend of Pratchett and Gaiman) - most of her books are for kids / teens but try The Dark Lord of Derkholm.

Also Rivers of London is obviously great, as everyone else has said.

OooPourUsACupLove · 01/04/2021 22:14

Nanny Ogg is brummie or black country for me :)

Not fantasy at all, but have you read Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City and sequels? I think he has a similar touch with his characters in that they are treated as humans who try their best but get things wrong as well.

LadyDanburysCane · 01/04/2021 22:20

I’ve always thought of Nanny Ogg as West Country. I just asked DH and he agreed.
OooPourUsACupLove · 01/04/2021 22:20

The Laundry Files have a similar humour. The setup is a secret government department that deals with the demonic and worse but still has all the IT problems, management meetings and bureaucracy of any other civil service function. It starts quite light-hearted (although gory) , but does get much much darker than Pratchett, especially the later ones.

Binglebong · 01/04/2021 22:20

Brandon Sanderson is superb - he has several different series so I suggest starting with The Final Empire which is the Mistborn Trilogy.

LadyDanburysCane · 01/04/2021 22:22

The Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman are good. Not as good or too similar to the great Terry Pritchett but DH and I really enjoyed them.

M0rT · 01/04/2021 22:26

Nanny Ogg has a Cork accent for me! I love that about reading, we all enjoy the same characters but personalise them to ourselves!
I'll 100th Rivers of London, especially on Audible Kobna is brilliant!
Also Charlaine Harris who writes True Blood is a good writer, not as wry as TP but we'll observed without the lachrymose heroines a lot of fantasy has.
Lois McMaster Bujold is also very good but I haven't listened to any of hers on Audible so can only recommend the books.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 01/04/2021 22:28

I'd try something non fantasy otherwise you will always be comparing to Terry. How about P.G Wodehouse for some classic comedy.

Howzaboutye · 01/04/2021 22:32

I recommend the radio series Cabin Pressure. It's just so funny! Can get it on SoundCloud.

BadgerFace · 01/04/2021 22:33

This might sound a bit left field but I loved the Malcolm Pryce series with Aberystwyth Mon Amour in a similar way to TP for the life references.

On a fantasy front, Robin Hobb is my second favourite after TP. A different style to TP but the worlds are so incredible and immersive. Start with the Farseer Trilogy.

Thanks for the thread, lots of suggestions I’ve not read and excited to look into!!

YesThisIsMe · 01/04/2021 22:48

Seconding plus a few new ones
Tom Holt
Jasper Fforde
Rivers of London
Cabin Pressure
Bleak Expectations (also a radio 4 come day series)
Douglas Adams (many many many years ago I was in a game of “guess who you are” with Terry Pratchett at a con and we gave him Douglas Adams. He took it well as I recall).
PG Wodehouse
3 Men in a Boat
Cold Comfort Farm

Talipesmum · 01/04/2021 23:47

Thanks all! I think Cornish Yorkshire brummie from Cork isn’t too far from the inexcusable mish mash I ended up with half the time...!
