Are high gloss kitchen units a good idea or not?

Will we spend all our time cleaning them.? Like the look though ....

We have them, the look is spot on, but god it shows the smallest finger mark. I'm Mr Neat and Tidy so I must end up wiping them down at least twice a day.

Not sure we'd have them again.

Jenjenn · 31/03/2021 07:26

Ours are fine. I have a high bar for tidiness and I don't find they need wiping down all the time. I do the bits around handles of three most used cabinets maybe weekly if not less? Its cream gloss maybe white or dark color would show smudges more.

We have high gloss and they’re fine - every mark does show but we don’t seem to get many marks at all. As a Pp said, it’s mostly around handles.

Much better than other door styles which have ledges/trims in the wood which collect dust and are impossible to clean.

linerforlife · 31/03/2021 07:30

We have high gloss white. They do get marks on, but actually you do see them unless you're really looking because the light reflects off them so well. I wipe them down with a tea towel and kitchen spray once a week.

pam290358 · 31/03/2021 07:35

We have high gloss cream units from Wickes and they’re fine. I don’t find they need wiping any more than Matt units. Agree with PP - darker units may show more marks. They reflect the light in the kitchen to really good effect and make the room seem brighter. One thing to bear in mind though, is the size of the kitchen - ours is fairly large and I would imagine in a small room it may be a bit overwhelming.

MazDazzle · 31/03/2021 07:35

I used to have a white gloss kitchen and it was very easy to keep clean.

I now have a very dark matt kitchen and every single fingerprint leaves a shiny mark - like someone has opened every cupboard with butter on the fingers.

PhilCornwall1 · 31/03/2021 07:36

They do for sure. Our wall units are cream gloss effect and hardly show the marks. Base units are aubergine and show a heck of a lot more.

SailingBuddy · 31/03/2021 07:38

We have grey gloss cabinets and they are a pain. They do show everything. But are easy to wipe and don’t stain easily

RJnomore1 · 31/03/2021 07:40

You need a window vac. They’re a doddle to look after tbh.

Kimye4eva · 31/03/2021 07:43

We have matt doors and whilst they do show every mark, particularly anything even just water that has dripped down the door, they are exceptionally easy to clean. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth and they look good as new again.

Two contradictory sets of views!

People i've known who had high gloss kitchens have said they're high maintenance. They look lovely when they've just been cleaned but don't stay that way for long.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 31/03/2021 08:54

Dark blue gloss top cupboards. They get a thorough going over weekly and any finger marks go with a quick wipe and buff with a microfibre cloth.

Probably better than matt cupboards which you might think are alright, but actually are pretty grubby, just because they don’t show every mark.

DinosApple · 31/03/2021 08:56

Loved my high gloss units in my old house, and we had touch openers on the cupboards too. Really easy to clean, light fresh look.

Now I've moved house and have a kitchen with wood Shaker style doors (dust magnets) and the ultimate bane of my life a white karndean floor. Just why?! Hmm

savanahnana · 31/03/2021 09:01

We had them in our old kitchen. I'd say they are more high maintenance but still quick and easy to keep looking nice. I used to use a microfiber cloth with window cleaner on mine and literally took seconds to wipe over and look smear free. Admittedly I did use to do this each day when I cleaned in the kitchen as I liked them staying spotless but then again I still do that with my current ones that arent gloss. I

I think it just depends on wether you'd want to be doing that regularly or any marks would bother you. I'd still have them again.

BashfulClam · 31/03/2021 09:12

I hated mine. I’d clean them and then they sunlight would just show streaks/smears and the coating started to peel off the door next to the cooker. The door I have now never show any marks and I love them

spidermomma · 31/03/2021 09:14

I have them. Look fab but if you have kids or pets. It's a no go....
dogs lick them once I clean them so must like my glass cleaner lol then every single touch my kids make shoes up like you'd never belive. Not practical for families I'd say, go with a nice wood if that's the case!! I'm sick of cleaning mine and even then they only look clean for half an hour ! X

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/03/2021 09:20

In my experience gloss is a lot easier to clean and white gloss is the best if you don’t want fingerprints. I do a lot of Indian cooking too and have stained previous wooden kitchens with tumeric or ruined handles by opening doors with roti dough on my hands etc but have no problem with white gloss.

MiloAndEddie · 31/03/2021 09:52

We’ve got cream gloss with no handles (just the little channel in the top of the door) and honestly they are fine. I’d be tempted to say better than the pale wood effect we had previously

RJnomore1 · 31/03/2021 09:56

Really not high maintenance BUT...I have no dogs, older children and handless doors so I suspect the grooves hide finger marks that gather round the handles usually

However you all need window vacs it’s a few minutes to go over them and fun to use (and I hate cleaning)

UnderOverGround · 31/03/2021 10:05

I have cream gloss. They don't show marks too much.

MiloAndEddie · 31/03/2021 10:21

Should add, I’ve got small DC too who touch everything and it doesn’t show

petitdonkey · 31/03/2021 10:25

My kitchen is by Schmidt and is cream gloss- now 14 years old and still looks immaculate! When I was in the showroom there was a cleaner there and I quietly asked her what she thought and she said they were a dream to clean. I just use a cloth with soapy water on- probably only do all of them every few months. On a weekly basis I just wipe around where we open them (no handles)

I still love it after all this time!

Katyy · 31/03/2021 10:30

Too much cleaning I think, you’ll be continually looking at them. Matt is so much better and more on trend at the moment.
