What to do with a dead rat?

My cat has just killed five rats in the garden. What am I supposed to do with them? When it was just mice we just chucked the remains in the field at the bottom of the garden but I'm not sure I should do this with a pile of dead rats. I'm not sure I should just put them in the bin either. Any thoughts anyone?

Bag up tightly and put in the bin? I'm sure wherever the rubbish goes eventually, it has rats? Or ask the council.

Gruntwork · 30/03/2021 17:26

Compost heap?

milinhas · 30/03/2021 17:27

I would put them in a bag, tied up, then the bin bag. Not sure if this is right though!

Good cat!

I think it’s fine to bag them up and bin them.

thenightsky · 30/03/2021 17:27

Double bag and in the bin.

LubaLuca · 30/03/2021 17:28

Lob them a long way into the field. A bird will probably eat them.

MrsBungle · 30/03/2021 17:28

when I found a dead rat we bagged it up and put it in the bin.

ChloeCrocodile · 30/03/2021 17:31

I’d chuck them into the field. They will either be eaten or decompose - either is fine as long as they aren’t near a door or window.

crashbandicootwarped · 30/03/2021 17:32

We put dead animals in the food waste.

stillplayswithtoys · 30/03/2021 17:33

Thanks everyone. We'll (I mean my DH - I ain't touching them!) put them in a bag in the bin!

I am somewhat relieved to see I'm not the only one who double bags and bins them!

PferdeMerde · 30/03/2021 17:37

Rat-onna-stick for dinner

Bomchiccawick · 30/03/2021 17:38

I’d just put it in the bin. Wrapping them in plastic seems a ridiculous use of plastic

Bomchiccawick · 30/03/2021 17:39

I just want to say plastic one more time...

Chasingsquirrels · 30/03/2021 17:39

Dead things go in the green bin here (our council website says meat - raw or cooked).

PrincessTuna · 30/03/2021 17:41

I buried one from my garden. And when I say "I" I mean my friend did. Shudder.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 30/03/2021 17:42

I’m not sure I see the need for the plastic?

I’d just buck it in the brown biodegradable waste bin, maybe whilst singing a respectful hymn.

sweetrocket · 30/03/2021 17:42

It depends how often your waste is collected. It's every 3 weeks where I am. I would not want dead rats festering for that long. They would be full of maggots. Speaks from experience after DH put a dead pigeon in the wheelie bin.

SingingSands · 30/03/2021 17:43

I just bin any that my cat brings home. I don't wrap in plastic because there's enough plastic in the bins as it is!

EggBobbin · 30/03/2021 17:46

Risotto or possibly slow roasted with lots of garlic?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 30/03/2021 17:47

I would just bury them

FatCatThinCat · 30/03/2021 17:50

Want to swap cats? Mine loves to catch rats, bring them in and release them in my bedroom. DH has been up dealing with them in the middle of the night way too often.

britnay · 30/03/2021 19:20

Please don't put it in with your garden waste. We take green waste from our local council to be broken down to compost and spread on our farmland.

We have to sort it by hand to pull out anything that shouldn't be there (and there is a lot of stuff that shouldn't be in there). Its not much fun digging out dead animals or animal waste. Especially if its been in there for a while in hot weather.

Knowingitsallover · 30/03/2021 20:13

Surely putting in food waste is also risky and disgusting as a lot of it is used for compost and rats carries diseases and its not meat thats from a supermarket etc
Personally I would ask my waste people and see what they said
