My DH has about 9 shotguns kept under lock and key in his gun safe. The Shotgun Licencing officer comes out every few years to check what he has against what is recorded on his Shotgun Licence.

If you buy or sell one it has to be updated immediately, witnessed and both parties have to inform the local police of a bought or sold gun.

Same applies to Firearms although my DH surrendered his firearms licence a few years ago and sold his rifle.

There’s actually a gun shop in my town!

You regularly hear gunshots going with people testing them

@eddiemairswife

I believe that in the USA you can buy an assault rifle in any corner shop!
Close. Not a corner shop, but Walmart sells guns. And ammo. And camo to wear when you're "hunting."

Imagine popping into the Asda for some milk, bread and a pistol?

MrsMariaReynolds · 30/03/2021 16:14

When I lived in Texas, there was a gun shop and indoor shooting range right next to a naice Starbucks. Imagine getting juiced up on caffeine and popping in next door...?

DGRossetti · 30/03/2021 16:16

Being in Brum, we have a Gun Quarter (as and aside, I love cities with "quarters")

And Brum has a long and proud history of manufacturing killing machines of all different calibres.

So if you want a keyring keepsake - you know where to come Smile

The laws and availability vary from state to state. California is relatively strict while neighbouring Arizona is relatively lax.

There's 'Machine Gun America' next to a Denny's in Orlando - anyone can fire guns there, from age 10 if you're accompanied by an adult.

My DH is a member of a shooting club so you can buy stuff there. There are guns shops in most places or folk can buy them second hand. For illegal guns it will be the internet or they will smuggle them in from other countries. My DH inherited one air rifle when his relative surrendered his licence and he has air pistols he's has bought from friends second hand. It's all above board. We are in Scotland so the police here issue the air gun or firearms licenses. He has a licence , the police know he has them and inspect him. They are under lock and key in a cabinet that's bolted to the ground.

Mythbusters had to decamp to AZ when they needed to fire the big guns. Although seeing as they were OK with an AK47 and an Uzi in CA, you have to wonder.
DeeCeeCherry · 30/03/2021 16:26

Well off people bring illegal guns into the country via private aircraft.

emmathedilemma · 30/03/2021 16:45

The ones in that episode of 24hrs in Police Custody where adapted from starting pistol type guns used in sport.

Interestingly, some of the big guns illegal in California are legal in the UK.

But are they going to be used to hold up an off licence ?

Vaguely reminds me of a story of a crim who managed to nick a shotgun and sawed the end off for an off licence raid that netted about £300. The Purdey he ruined was worth £50,000. It's all a bit "Lock, Stock" but I heard that in the 80s from a copper.

I’m in the U.K. too btw
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/03/2021 17:01

There's a building about 200m away from my house wIth at least 1000 in. Some one has to count them regularly. They check all tHe serial numbers at least once a month too...

If as much as a firing pin is missing the shot hits the fan!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 30/03/2021 17:19

If I was buying a gun here in the US I'd go to the Uncle Henry classifieds.

Buying a gun at Walmart isn't quite as easy as buying bread, btw.

In the UK I expect people buy what they want using the dark web

LudoBear · 30/03/2021 18:25

I went to a gun dealer on a local high street. As pp said, you need an appropriate licence, or they won't sell to you.

OpenKhakiHelper · 15/11/2024 05:37

Most folks I know just go to regular gun shops or sporting goods stores if they're buying a gun, or sometimes even get them from private sales if it's all above board.
There’s also places like Every Gun Part for anyone who’s just looking for parts to build or fix up a gun—pretty popular with hobbyists.
Gun shows are another big spot for buying, though they still have rules to follow, so it’s not like anyone can just walk out with one without the paperwork.
