Jeremy Vine just played "The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby and the Range.

OMG , I was instantly transported back to Sixth Form. I could picture myself waiting at the bus stop on the way home from buying it (on vinyl of course!) , the friend I knew who passed by by bike and waved whilst we were waiting, the 6th form boyfriend who got me into Bruce Hornsby (and his attic bedroom Smile). I was here saying to the DC I love, love, love this song. They were very Hmm.

I don't think I'd even heard it for 10 or more years, but it was suddenly the summer of 1988 in my kitchen.

So what I meant to ask, was, does anyone else have any songs that or so evocative?

Probably everybody, OP! For me it’s “I’m not in love”, by 10cc. It used to play endlessly in the Student’s Union where DH and I went together for drinks at uni. He’s been dead for nearly 30 years, but that song still transports me back and reduces me to tears. I miss him to this day.

I heard 'The Best of Times' on the radio yesterday - first time I'd heard it since I sang it at a Gang Show 25-30 years ago! Was very odd hearing it again.

Went to a party as a teenager in my friends house in 1979 and "You can ring my bell" by Anita Ward was number one at the time. Some boy had bought the 45" single and wouldn't let anyone else near the record player and just played that song on repeat ALL night.

I can't hear it without thinking of a dark crowded living room, with a corner bar bearing a plastic ice bucket shaped like a pineapple, a big gold sunray clock, orange and brown patterned wallpaper and rum and coke (which we were way too young to be drinking!)

I probably should have said “what are your evocative songs....” rather than “does anybody have any evocative songs...” I agree @Babdoc, everybody must do! I am sorry to hear about your DH, but I like your Students’ Union story. Great track x

It's three years tomorrow since my DM died, so I'm very sensitive..

But yesterday on Twitter, there was a pianist who had posted a compilation of kids TV music from the 80s. The theme to We Are The Champions came on and I just lost it.

My absolute favourite programme that my Mum used to try and rush me back from an after school club in time to watch. I cried a lot.

The intro of Relax by FGTH. Instantly transported to the 80s, and nightclubbing in Central Birmingham (while still at school). The best time ever.

80s music does it for me in general. I'd swap it for the 2020s at the moment!
