When did you get rid of the 'big' toys for your dc?

Mine are 7 years old. They are more interested in Minecraft and drawing. Football etc. The large pirate ship and large imaginext batcave, magic tracks haven't been looked at in a long long time.
Should I sell them (or do they go back to these at a later stage)
I know no one can answer that exactly but just wonder if its worth keeping them?
I will keep the Duplo etc for when nieces and nephews visit.

Bumping as I would like an idea As well.

GojiberryStar · 29/03/2021 21:50

Still really young. I'd keep them and have some screen free days playing with these things. Chances are, if they haven't played for a while, they will be thrilled to play with them if you get them out. Especially if you play too...

Had similar with playmobil with my 8 yo but a) it costs a fortune and I'd like to get as much value as possible b) I don't want them on screens all the time (which would be the default !)

GojiberryStar · 29/03/2021 21:50

Sorry missed that you also said football and drawing.

GojiberryStar · 29/03/2021 21:51

Otherwise remove, hide in garage. Give them a couple of months to notice.

RoseMartha · 29/03/2021 21:51

Do you have a loft? If so i would put them up there for six months and see if dc asked for them. If not then I would sell or donate to friends or charity

If storage space tight have a chat to dc about them first.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 29/03/2021 21:52

Suggest to them that you get rid of them... they'll suddenly get played with!

I was planning to start packing the large toys for my 7 year old son and since Saturday he has been playing with his toys after he stopped months ago. I’m now confused

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/03/2021 22:03

My DS is about to turn 8. I've got rid of most toys but kept a few things he likes - his nerf guns, Lego sets and dinosaurs.

BluntlySpoken · 29/03/2021 22:05

By 8 my ds only had lego nerf and games like bop it, board games.
I now have a 3 and 1 year old and have so much stuff I long for the days they have minimal haha

We are gradually moving the big toys out (dc 9 and 7). I generally put them in the garage for a few months, and if no mention of them from DC .. they go to charity shop.

GojiberryStar · 29/03/2021 22:28

Wow surprised so many get rid of toys so young.

We've got a box of duplo from years back abs it still gets played with from time to time for build challenges (big box)

TheChosenTwo · 29/03/2021 22:30

Ds is 9, during the first lockdown we had a big sort out and put all the ‘big toys’ he no longer wanted outside the front of the house for anyone to take, including the bat cave and batbot thing! They must be the bulky curse of many households Grin
We had such a brilliant declutter and he kept looking out of the window and getting excited when children past.
He hasn’t expressed any regret, still has toys that he plays with but as he gets older the things he wants to play with has changed - his room stays much tidier when it’s less crowded with toys too! Easy to Chuck things back in their relevant boxes at the end of the day.

Woodlandbelle · 29/03/2021 22:31

Thanks so much. I might put them under the stairs (large cupboard they don't bother with)
They still do a lot of free play with hot wheels and Lego. They like UNO and card games. But these big bulky toys don't seem to interest them. Youngest only plays with Teddy bears.

Hi Goji I wouldnt get rid of Duplo. They love it. Especially in the garden in the good weather.

Yes the big imaginext stuff is fantastic. Ours really wanted them and we managed to get two for 15 quid each in marketplace. So we were very lucky. They were very expensive new.

So much better than Lego for plain building stuff since it doesn't kill your fingers trying to separate it.

Nor do you die if you stand on it 😀
