Gazebo or parasol?

Completely boring question but im stuck between buying either a gazebo or parasol for the garden.

Have an almost 2 year old DD, our back garden is south west facing so it gets a lot of sun in the afternoon so I need to buy something to create an area of shade.

My parents rave about gazebos but i dont know if i want something that just stays in the same place and takes up a good amount of the grass area. Also concerned it will just get trashed in bad weather.

Whereas a parasol may not provide as much shade but at least i can move it around the garden depending on where the sun is.

Which would you choose? Please help me decide Grin

We have a parasol and it's very good. I bought an awning for use this summer over the patio area. It was 15 quid. Will keep it up most of the summer I think. 3 meter triangle shape. The gazebo might be hard to move?

UntamedWisteria · 28/03/2021 09:23

I read an article yesterday saying most places have run out of gazebos now ...

We have a rectangular sail which goes across a part of our small garden. It can be easily taken up and down and gives a good patch of shade.

We use a gazebo on the really hot days over summer. & parasol in between. We have a south face garden - I don’t like the idea of something there all the time and the gazebo I have is easy to put up and down.

UCOinaUCG · 28/03/2021 09:26

We have had both in our garden Gazebos are okay but are shady all the time which can be annoying and both of ours blew down and got wrecked eventually. We currently have a parasol with a heavy base that swings out over the area to be shaded and the position can be moved fairly easily. We like it much better.

Well lots of people thinking about entertaining outside as lockdown eases - so you'd better get your order in soon!

rainbow the Range have loads. Also large parasols like that photo above. For 75 pound

@UCOinaUCG

Ours is like this.
Where did you buy it? Would you recommend it, does it protect enough from the sun?
MaddieElla · 02/05/2021 09:34

I'd not have a gazebo again. They look good (ours was on the patio rather than grass). It needed tethering down so heavily to stop it snapping in the wind that it ended up being a pain.

I untethered it slightly so DDs pool could get some sun on it and that night it was wrecked in the wind.

We've bought one of the banana Cantilever parasols now which can be moved and taken up and down.

MaddieElla · 02/05/2021 09:34

There's a Cantilever in Homebase at the moment for £100. Not sure of the quality.

We have a gazebo but anchoring it down is a big factor. Ours is in a corner between the house and a wall so we have metal rings screwed into the walls which we attach bungee cords to. We still take it down over winter and take the cover off if high winds are forecast.

Our garden is sort of north west facing so we get a lot of low sun in the afternoon. Parasols just didn't work as they wouldn't bend to the angle we needed.

We now have voile curtains on the sides of the gazebo which we untie for afternoon shade and that works very well.

EventuallyDistracted · 02/05/2021 09:48

We have a 3m parasol but can't put it through our table as its too close to the fence so it is in a stand on the patio. But our patio is old fashioned uneven slabs which makes it wobble and fall over in strong winds even if its down. So we have to take it out of the holder but then that's a bit of a tripping hazard and very heavy to move. But we have a long narrow garden and a gazebo would totally block the view so that's not great either.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/05/2021 09:52

I bought a gazebo last year, this year I got a parasol easier to take down when windy. Will get the gazebo out at some point when the weather is better.

supadupapupascupa · 02/05/2021 10:17

We have both. I love the gazebo for a permanent shady and rain protected area throughout the day. But come evening we also need the parasol. One is fixed, one is flexible. We need both
