If and when you hire a car...

...do you get that excess waiver thing so you pay less should you be in an accident?

It bumps up the cost so bloody much but there's that niggly "oooh what if, just in case"thought that makes me pay it.
I'll probably end up getting sat nav for £6 a day too at this rate Hmm

You can buy it much cheaper before you hire the car online. Just google it. I didn’t buy it the first time I hired a car and got so worried about getting stung, I was scared to drive the damn thing.

I then found out you could get it cheaply online and have done it that way since.

Cookerhood · 27/03/2021 20:47

Yes we got ours before we went away Jan 2020. Got it for a year as I thought we would be hiring a car last summer. Thanks Covid.

CatherineCawood · 27/03/2021 20:48

Yes always buy it and once wrote off a hire car so was very glad I did.

RaininSummer · 27/03/2021 20:57

I bought independent insurance to cover the huge excess the hire company charges. Works out great value if you hire several cars over the year.

Findahouse21 · 27/03/2021 20:58

Yes, but we buy it separately rather than through the hire company which makes it much much cheaper

Findahouse21 · 27/03/2021 20:59

Also, 90% of hire cars have built in Sat nav, so don't pay extra

Frazzled2207 · 27/03/2021 20:59

Not via the hire care company but you can get it on carhirexcess.com I think. Def worthwhile.
We got stung once when we broke the windscreen on a hired van without paying the waiver. Never again.

Frazzled2207 · 27/03/2021 21:00

Def not worth buying Satnav just use google maps which you can probably link via Bluetooth to the screen

LegendDairy · 27/03/2021 21:01

No, we risked it. I hired a car 2/3 time every year for the last 10 years and didn't ever pay for it. We were really lucky but we knew the risk we were taking.

LondonStone · 27/03/2021 21:09

We didn’t usually until a giant truck coming in the opposite directly kicked up a tiny stone or bit of gravel and it hit our windshield. Completely unavoidable and not our fault (as in we weren’t careless, just not a well kept road) and it cost us £1050. That hit us hard at the time.

lookatgiraffenow · 27/03/2021 21:55

I didn't even think of buying insurance from a seperate company...that's incredibly useful, thanks very much. Brilliant!

We pay (or paid..) for a yearly worldwide policy, it's £75 roughly for 2 of us. We used (!) to travel abroad quite a bit, and it saved us a fortune. Highly recommend, they are super easy to deal with too. I think it's about £30 for a single trip single person for a week, so usually a big saving.

Andv · 27/03/2021 22:03

@canihaveacoffeeplease what company did you use ?

Graffitiqueen · 27/03/2021 22:04

We buy a yearly policy independently too. When we can travel that is.

Trafficwarden · 27/03/2021 22:53

I’ve used Questor although I’ve not had to make a claim. I think it was about £35 with a code from moneysavingexpert. Definitely worth it for peace of mind.

canihaveacoffeeplease · 27/03/2021 23:02

@Andv we used questor, would totally recommend them

KatharinaRosalie · 28/03/2021 08:20

No, I use mu credit card that also gives me rental car insurance
