What happens if you meet someone new and they have a dog with the same name as yours?

I'm bored! This is a scenario that's never going to happen to me but it just popped into my head!

You couldn't suddenly change one of the names - would you just get used to both dogs coming when you called the name?!

You just change the name. Dogs don’t know it’s their name, they aren’t attached to it - it’s just a command to get their attention.
Dogs are totally capable of learning new commands.

A friend married a fellow parent from her daughter's school. His daughter is in the same class as her daughter, and they both have the same (Top 10) forename. Neither has a nickname.
They do both come when called, or the parents tend to yell 'My X' when they just want one.

katy1213 · 27/03/2021 13:15

What happens if they have a child with the same name as one of yours? And there isn't even a rehoming option!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 27/03/2021 13:18

Chances are none of the dogs will come, if they are anything like mine.

Biscuit! Tends to do it.

IAcceptCookies · 27/03/2021 13:22

My dog also answers to my cat's name Hmm.

You'd probably want both dogs at the same time anyway, to walk or feed!

Cherrysoup · 27/03/2021 13:48

A friend took on someone’s dog when the owner emigrated. It had the same name as her husband.

We looked after someone’s dog that had the same name as the neighbour’s child-we went round to explain!

NeverTrustaRabbit · 27/03/2021 14:27

You laugh and acknowledge it's an amusing coincidence and shows you both obviously have excellent taste in naming dogs.

Both of mine answer to their own name and the others.....because they have FOMO and god forbid one should get a fuss/treat/worm tablet and the other miss out 😂😂😂

Kezzie200 · 27/03/2021 14:30

Sounds a good idea to me! If you want one to behave you probably want them both to.

Shep!

Sounds much clearer than

Shep and Smoky

NameChange74567 · 27/03/2021 14:32

My neighbours dog has the same name as my niece.

Onthegrid · 27/03/2021 14:36

All the animals I have ever owned had a given name and then at least 2 others.
Eg
Clive
Cuddles
Doofus
They usually responded if they were feeling that way inclined. I had one that had excellent recall for a male voice, was reasonable for me if we were in a 1-2-1 session and just ignored female/children at all other times.
If we are out at the park I would usually use dogs when calling anyway

Ladymouse · 27/03/2021 14:47

My friend had to rehome her dog and the people who took her also had a dog with the same name. They were both older dogs so don't think they would of renamed them. Not sure how they got on.

Aliceair · 27/03/2021 14:48

Thank you for the replies. My own dog doesn't come at all, no matter what name you try. He lives in perpetual fear of being taken for a walk and has found himself a few hiding places around the house and garden!

I've just remembered that my sister in law called her first son after her parents' dog.

I thought you meant meeting someone with the same name as your dog. Which also could be awkward

JustGiveMeGin · 27/03/2021 15:07

I would just change the first letter of one of their names...so if for example they were both called Rex I would end up with a Rex and a TexGrin

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 27/03/2021 16:21

You'd have a laugh about it and hoped the dogs got on with each other?

WarmKitty · 27/03/2021 16:45

The Government collapses.

But in all seriousness, I do have a colleague who has a son named Ben (not his real name) whose second husband also has a son from his first marriage named Ben.

NailsNeedDoing · 27/03/2021 16:50

I thought you meant the same name as yours like it was your own name OP, not your dogs! That would have been awkward.

drainrat · 27/03/2021 17:09

Years ago I worked with someone who kept referring to “Steve One” and “Steve Two” in conversation. One day I plucked up the courage to ask who they were. Steve One was the cat, on the scene first and top priority. Steve Two was her husband.

zafferana · 27/03/2021 17:11

Yeah, that would be awkward, but not as awkward as the kids with same name thing - not sure I could date someone with a kid the same name as mine. I once dated a guy with the same name as my DB - it was okay until I introduced them and then it felt weird.

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 27/03/2021 17:15

I think it would be brilliant - reminds me of an uncle who apparently just called all his dogs Lassie. (This may be a complete lie fed to me by my Grandad though). Likewise kids.

What I think would be actually awkward is going out with someone who had the same name as your dog. Or your kid, come to think of it.

AbsolutelyCrapuless · 27/03/2021 17:22

I know a couple that this happened to.

Dogs both called the same name eg. Oscar and one was white and one was black so they just got called ‘white Oscar’ and ‘black Oscar’ when either of them needed to confirm which Oscar.

It didn’t mean anything other times as like PP have said you call one dog you likely need the two!

Dundustin · 27/03/2021 17:25

Steve one and Steve two made me laugh!

WiganNorthWest · 27/03/2021 17:27

Friends adopted a dog called Max when their son Max went to uni. Now the dog is Max and son is usually referred to as Human Max by his own parents.

doctorhamster · 27/03/2021 17:37

A friend of mine has a dog with the same name as her husband (dog pre dates the husband). She refused to change the dogs name Grin
