Would you eat this?

I made homemade chilli last Friday. Had a portion left so put it in the fridge intending to eat it but forgot. Do you think if it was heated really well it could be eaten tonight? I say no husband says yes??

No. And you can't smell or taste some of the bacteria that give you food poisoning. Nor can you 'nuke' them to death - otherwise we'd just nuke everything and nothing would be 'off' anymore.

Sexnotgender · 26/03/2021 17:19

Vegetarian chilli maybe.

Meat based, absolutely not.

ThePricklySheep · 26/03/2021 17:21

@crazylikechocolate

A whole week seems a bit too long but to be fair many similar supermarket ready meals have a week plus date on them
They might be packaged with gas that inhibits bacteria growth though. They will certainly be heat treated after being sealed.
Daisydoesnt · 26/03/2021 17:24

supermarket ready meals can have a similar refrigerated life

Ready meals have a longer shelf because they are produced in a particular way - after cooking they are blast chilled (so they are brought down to a temp to be refrigerated) super quick. They are also packaged in an “environment” (a special gas, under the film like) which inhibits the growth of bacteria. So it is not the same thing at all.

I think your DH is a bloody fool to eat meat that has been hanging round in a domestic fridge for a week!

Twospaniels · 26/03/2021 17:26

Nope, in the bin with it.

joystir59 · 26/03/2021 17:29

Veg chilli will be liquefying into compost by now.

partyatthepalace · 26/03/2021 17:29

It’s too long.

I mean you’d probably be totally fine _ but over 5 days is a long time

londongirl12 · 26/03/2021 17:33

I eat anything a few days old, but I wouldn't go as far as a week

ProfMcGonigle · 26/03/2021 17:35

No. 2 days for me, 3 at a push and only after lots of sniff tests and tentative tastes. It's not worth it

kowari · 26/03/2021 17:35

My limit is three days for chicken or rice, five for meat, seven for veg.

AlwaysLatte · 26/03/2021 17:36

I usually bin things after 3 days max. A week - nope!

Eviethyme · 26/03/2021 17:37

After 3 days you will get ill. All food but especially meat should be consumed within 2 days or 3 at a push but meat will rot after 3 days.

Kitbiscuit · 26/03/2021 17:53

Tuesday would have been the absolutely latest for me.

Bringonthemushrooms · 26/03/2021 17:54

Thanks guys it's in the bin 😀

Katyy · 26/03/2021 17:54

Don’t eat it ! You can’t tell if it’s off ,or make it better by boiling it to death. You could be seriously ill.

ReverendRicketyCricket · 26/03/2021 17:56

Yes honestly - I'm also a complete minger with standards on the floor and I wouldn't eat that. I know you've put it in the bin now and I think that was the right move.

Parkerwhereareyou · 26/03/2021 17:59

I definitely wouldn't. Let him eat it if he wants?!

amusedbush · 26/03/2021 20:05

I generally view food guidelines as a challenge rather than a recommendation but I wouldn’t touch it. Glad you binned it!

kaleishorrid · 26/03/2021 20:17

@Tartyflette

Smell it then taste it and see. I thunk supermarket ready meals can have a similar refrigerated life.
This is what I would do - smell, then taste. You'll know if I'd ok. But I HATE wasting food - especially if I've cooked it - less fussed about throwing away takeaway
