Moving to Bristol from Cambridge

Hello

We are moving to the Bristol area to be near family and my husband will be working in the city. We have 8 year old twins and 13 year old. My husband noticed commute by train into Bristol.

So we are looking for areas with good train
Links, not too close to Bristol so we get a bit more for money in terms of garden et cetera, we will need a secondary school and primary school.

Has anyone got any advice on areas? We do not know the area at all!

Thanks so much in advance!

Which part of Cambridge, city or surrounding suburbs ? Large or small village?

Do you want something similar or something comp, etely different?

I've lived in both and might be able to help with areas outside, towards Gloucester. Any price bracket?

YayoKireZukusi · 26/03/2021 16:26

What's your budget?
3 bedrooms or 4?
tbh I suspect that you might pay more for somewhere outside Bristol with good communiting links by train than you would for somewhere within the city, precisely because of the schools issue!

Whereabouts in Bristol will your dh be working?

Muuuuuuuum · 26/03/2021 16:47

Somewhere near Nailsea and Backwell station maybe?

You say you have family in the area - where are they? Do you want to be nearby?

Muuuuuuuum · 26/03/2021 16:50

Or Keynsham maybe. But think house prices near good schools in those areas are pretty comparable to Bristol...

MaverickDanger · 26/03/2021 16:52

Keynsham’s nice - close so it is still fairly pricey though.

We ended up in Taunton and can get a hell of a lot of house for your money, 30 mins on train to Bristol and some really brilliant schools.

Thank you for your reply

We are currently in cherry Hinton but want to move to a more rural location with big garden, but no more than 30 minutes on train to Bristol.

We need a 4/5 bed house with a separate annex or annex potential, for my mum, budget around 650k

Thank you!

Husband will be working in Queen Square.

Is there an issue with schools in Bristol then?

Thank you

Family are in Chard, so that side of Bristol

I'd start by looking up train times - frequency and time to Bristol - from a few places between Bristol and Chard and then looking on Rightmove to get a feel for prices in different areas.
I can't really help more than that, I live in Bristol and love it (despite sitting here listening to the police helicopter above the protests right now) so don't really know much about what is beyond the city. Good luck.

ASimpleLobsterHat · 26/03/2021 20:53

Nailsea and Backwell are both doable on that budget and the schools are good. You can get trains to bristol (not sure how long the journey is, but definitely less than 30 mins)and direct trains to London too. Surrounded by nice countryside.

Spillanelle · 26/03/2021 21:13

There are some nice areas towards the north of the city around Almondsbury/Olveston/Tockington or Thornbury maybe. Not sure about trains from there but there are probably bus links into the city centre.
Keynsham is good for train links and nice that it’s close to Bath too.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/03/2021 01:13

Keynsham to Temple Meads is about 10 minutes by train, but it does get extremely packed during rush hour. (Like nose in a strangers armpit close!). Queen Square is about 15 minutes walk from the station.

The thing to know about Bristol is that its a country and a city. So Keynsham is actually in Bath and North East Somerset, Yate and Thornbury are in South Gloucestershire, and Nailsea and Blackwell are in North Somerset. Each having their own schools and education departments.
