Any experts on death certificates?

So if on a death certificate of someone died that was adopted, what reason would it need to be to mention their birth name. As far as I'm aware once the new name and adoption is resigistered the birth name is obselete. On this death certificate it says Name: person who died - and underneath - Formerly known as: name given by birth mother. What circumstances would this occur? Even the lady at the bmd offices said that's not normal.

No idea. But very helpful to future family historians.
Also kind of nice, giving 'recognition' to their history.

No specific knowledge of this, but when I went with my stepfather to register DM’s death, we were given and took the option of entering her previous married name from her marriage to DF. The registrar suggested it would be helpful in the future if anyone researched the family history.

If they had an original birth certificate that's why it had to go on the death certificate. Because they were once known as that original name. IMHO.

But they were only known by the name the parents gave him for a matter of weeks until the adoption went through and new adoption certificate created, then his birth name would have become obselete and really should not have been on the death certificate?

It's so it can all be traced. If you change your name due to marriage or by deed poll it's the same. If there's a birth certificate there needs to be a corresponding death certificate

They always ask for all of the names that the person has been known by. My DM changed her middle and maiden names a few times during the course of her life, so she’s got about four names on hers. My name chopped and changed with hers when I was very young, so even though I was only known by one particular name until I was three, I’m sure that will go down on my death certificate as well (if DH/DCs remember).

I do think it’s just a traceability thing for future genealogists, but would be interested to know if it’s for something else.
