Conviction on dbs will I still have the job offer?

In 2015 I got on my train to work and paid for my ticket at the station where I got off I always did this. A lady was asking me questions at the time as I was lining up to pay for my ticket but didn't realise it was for a fine I was about 19 back then.

I'm about to start my job for the NHS but my enhanced dbs just come through today and that's on there. I only found out about the fine last year I wanted to take it to court but couldn't afford it at the time.

Will I still be offered the job? So stressed about it all

You should be fine. Let them know asap, to put your mind at rest as.much as anything.

Presumably you said you had no convictions on the application form but it should be easy enough to explain why you forgot about it. It's very minor.

Sorry I don't understand at all - what crime did you commit?

IdblowJonSnow · 25/03/2021 20:21

Can't imagine it will matter. But in future always declare it. Very few organisations would get excited about that.
Good luck.

I would assume fair evasion. The employer really won't care.
JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 25/03/2021 20:27

But you must have been prosecuted or at least cautioned OP? Fixed Penalty Notices don't show up on enhanced DBS checks unless the police think it's relevant to the job

mrsfen · 25/03/2021 20:27

Fare evasion as i said I only found out about it last year I never realised things like that went on a dbs as I had a standard one a couple months and it wasn't on there.

How can you only have found out you were convicted of fair evasion last year?

mrsfen · 25/03/2021 20:28

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows it was all sent to my old address I moved back to my hometown a week after so I would never had known.

Was it a conviction, formal caution (that you accepted) or a Fixed Penalty Notice?

MiddleClassMother · 25/03/2021 20:53

It sounds like you may have a conviction for fare evasion OP, if you didn't know about the FPN then you can't of paid it?

mrsfen · 26/03/2021 10:15

I don't know how to explain it to the new employer do I explain the whole situation or just make it short?

This makes no logical sense. Why was some lady asking you questions for a fine when you were queuing to pay for your ticket?

skeggycaggy · 26/03/2021 10:18

I would email the employer and explain it clearly & unemotionally.

My sibling has a caution for squatting as a teenager (!) which they’ve declared to employers under the impression it would show up on an enhanced DBS check, not sure if this is correct? Anyway it’s never been an issue for employers.

mrsfen · 26/03/2021 10:28

She asked me where I was travelling from and why I didn't pay for it before boarding. And took my address and details I honestly didn't think anything of it.

@skeggycaggy hahaha that made me laugh

Just write an email:

in 2015 I took the train to work, and wasn't able to pay for a ticket as I boarded the train. I thought that I would be able to pay for a ticket on the train or when I arrived at my destination, however when I got to my destination I was told I would have to be fined instead. As a result of this mistake I was convicted for fare evasion. I believe that this conviction will have shown up on my enhanced DBS and wanted to give you the context for this. It was a one-off errror that I deeply regret, and which will never be repeated.

What's the job? If it's anything with attention to detail you might want to give some sort of excuse for why you didn't buy a ticket.

user1493494961 · 26/03/2021 11:16

At the time, I suppose you thought it wouldn't matter.

NerrSnerr · 26/03/2021 11:55

I would explain you got a conviction for fair evading but I wouldn't say how the lady was asking you questions and you didn't know why etc because it sounds like you're either lying or completely oblivious to what's going on around you.

I am a bit curious to why you were buying a ticket at the destination- unless you knew it was always an unmanned train so was saying you were doing a shorter journey so it was cheaper.

mrsfen · 26/03/2021 12:36

@NerrSnerr I always got my ticket on the train if I was running late no ticket officer was on their so I was queuing up at the ticket office to get a ticket. You can't get through Leeds station barrier without a ticket anyway.
