DD dry hands from sanitiser

Posting here for traffic, my dd has really dry hands from so much washing and sanitiser at school. They are really red and painful for her. Can anyone recommend a good moisturiser suitable for children?

My daughter has the same thing. I recently picked up Vaseline + Anti Bac. It's a little white tube. They sell it in B&M

GP suggested aqueous cream for dd, but the only thing that's worked is taking her own bar of soap to school.

I’ve been using Childs Farm moisturiser on my two. It’s made a big difference. Lots of people rate it for eczema too.

It comes in a pump bottle too so they can manage it themselves.

Pure mango butter - cheap to buy, absolutely great for hands and you can melt and reset in tiny pots so she can carry them to school with her.

Scrubbingtons hand sanitiser is a good alternative. The school let me send some in. www.scrubbingtons.com/products/bug-off-hand-sanitiser

My DS got a massive skin fare up from all the washing and gel. His hands and wrist were raw! Someone recommended ‘gloves in a bottle’. This has made an enormous difference. I put it on him in the morning and it protects for most of the day.

Bioderma has done wonders for my dd. This was them before!

HazeyJaneII · 25/03/2021 19:26

Dd2 ended up with an infection from the eczema cracks in her hands and wrists, with all the washing.
She is not to use hand gel and uses Dermol to wash her hands, and Hydromol after.

my dc hands get smothered with weleda skin food before bed when it's bad.
palmers cocoa butter in the morning as it's not greasy once sunk in. (and smells lovely)

Hoorayhenryyah · 25/03/2021 19:28

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! It’s such a shame, they are so red and dry and I’m worried the skin will start to crack

We had the same thing. The pharmacist recommended epaderm cream to use as a soap at school, and for hand sanitiser he uses the Garnier sensitive one. It’s made such a difference and they don’t hurt or look red anymore

Shouldbedoing · 25/03/2021 19:29

My boy hates the sensation of cream on his hands but is red raw from washing them. I cut up a pair of socks to make wrist covers with a thumb hole snipped in the side. I can slather his hands with cream and he puts these mitts on to go to bed like old man Steptoe

triplechoc · 25/03/2021 19:32

We had the same thing last summer, moisturiser made DS’s hands sting, so we ended up using a thin layer of sudocrem under socks on his hands for bed.

inmyplace · 25/03/2021 19:42

My ds's have bad eczema. We use 'no germs'. I buy the big bottle and decant it into tiny spray bottles that fit in their pocket. They just take that out any time they have to use sanitiser. Seems gentle and hasn't caused any flare ups or soreness. (& its not sticky).

warnc007 · 25/03/2021 19:49

We had the same issue and my 7 year old now takes a tube of aqueous cream to school to use during the day.

KatyN · 25/03/2021 20:02

The school should have included reactions to the hand washing in their risk assessment. My son’s hands started to bleed before the first lock down. He now has his own soap and doesn’t use the alcohol rub. He needs to dry his hands fully too as that causes a flare up.

He likes the aveeno hand cream but I did buy about 46282948473 different types until he found one he’d apply happily.

You may have to only put a smidge in to start with as it may sting.

Okeefes working hands sorted my dd out when hers were cracked and sore from hand sanitiser

wishywashywoowoo70 · 25/03/2021 21:31

My DD suffered too. Aqueous cream worked very quickly. I put some of those gloves on you get with a manicure set that no one ever uses on get with the cream when she went to bed.

tinseloatcake · 25/03/2021 21:33

We've got agreement for hand washing rather than sanitizer for my child that suffers. It has helped. And then that vaseline stuff at the top as well.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/03/2021 21:44

I would consider sending her in with her own soap too.

Dd2s hands were red raw, covered in a rash. She now takes her own soap in a tin I think its called "Alter native " or something. Faith In nature is a good soap too.

Its helped alot.

DemiBourbon · 25/03/2021 21:45

I second O’Keefe’s working hands. It was the only thing that worked for me and DS. The one on the tube is best as the tub seems oily.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 25/03/2021 21:50

Third for O'Keefes working hands. Im a nurse and I swear by it. My colleagues use it too.

Serendipity2021 · 27/03/2021 07:06

Oilatum works really well for us and my mum recommended olive oil (extra virgin) or coconut oil. Kids use Vital Life hand sanitiser. It is a gel but it doesn’t seem to be drying hands out.

Jenjenn · 27/03/2021 07:27

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 at bedtime with socks over worked absolute wonders for my dds red raw knuckles.
