Coil fitting

Hi, hoping to get a copper coil soon and just wondered if it's fairly straightforward and you can go back to work after the appointment the same day. I've had two children and consider my pain threshold quite high.

It’s fine. Just take painkillers beforehand.

cannaethink · 25/03/2021 18:51

Totally fine. Especially if your births were vaginal.

Scarletcup · 25/03/2021 19:31

Great! Thank you 👍 yes both were vaginal births.

Totally fine, and I am a huge wimp. I took a couple of paracetamol half an hour beforehand on the advice of a thread on here, and told the nurse I was a bit nervous and she held my hand while the doc did it, but it was definitely less grim than a smear.

@knitwearordeath that's good to hear. Just got to wait for my appt now.... hopefully I'll hear something soon & can get it over with!

My first was fine, the second triggered cervical shock. That was unpleasant, but I was well looked after and could drive home after half an hour or so.

Mummadeze · 26/03/2021 07:34

Mine wasn’t fine. I tried on two separate occasions but it was impossibly painful. I got it done under general anaesthetic on the third time in hospital so there was a solution. I have an unusually small cervix so don’t worry but just telling you this in case you find it harder than anticipated.

Haven't given birth vaginally, do have a high pain threshold. First insertion didn't work (they tried for 30 mins!). Second attempt was fine as they tried with a different, more flexible coil. Was unpleasant but not too painful and over fast. I had minimal bleeding after but quite strong back cramps over the next couple of days which meant yes I did take a day off work, but all ok after that.

folloyourarro · 26/03/2021 10:31

Yes I went straight to work, just have some painkillers on hand as it can cause cramping as it settles and a sanitary towel for spotting.

Hope the fitting was OK!
The fact that many posts here are about women's traumatic and painful experiences of coil fitting, suggest that we are receiving poor quality and sometimes inhumane care when it comes to coil fitting.
I am 5 weeks postnatal and would like a coil. I've had one before and it was the most painful experience of my life. More than broken bones and failed induction, not that women should have to justify.
What I want to find out is, where can I find a health service that will offer anaesthesia with coil fitting.
It's not OK to assume that Paracetamol and or ibuprofen/codeine is enough for all women for coil fitting. Some providers are offering local on the cervix for fitting, but I am struggling to find out where I can go for this.
