Best time of year for Scotland

LudoBear · 24/03/2021 16:02

Looking to book 3 weeks in Scotland, in static caravans next year.

The plan is...
3 nights in Dumfries & Galloway
7 nights Pitlochry
4 nights Dornoch
3 nights Nairn
4 nights Eyemouth (yes I know that's England)

What time of year is best for goodish weather?

No wrong weather in Scotland op... Just the wrong clothes!!

SpringlikeBunk · 24/03/2021 16:07

please factor in midge conditions Shock

Justmuddlingalong · 24/03/2021 16:08

If the rain doesn't get you, the midges will. I've had numerous, fantastic holidays in Scotland in all seasons, you have to pick your poison.

sleepyhead · 24/03/2021 16:10

May/June's often best for sunshine and too early for midges. Late August/September can also be nice.

It always seems to start raining when the Scottish school holiday's start and stops when they go back Grin.

Mincepiesallyearround · 24/03/2021 16:13

The summer half term ie late May early June often has lovely weather!

Easterbunnygettingready · 24/03/2021 16:13

Scottish midges are a throw back of a type of pterodactyl I believe... We usually go on October but are braving an August trip also this year..

HadEnoughOfBears · 24/03/2021 16:14

I'd say spring / early summer.
And Eyemouth is in Scotland too.

OllyBJolly · 24/03/2021 16:47

The areas you are planning to visit aren't too bad for midges. West coast is bad but you're missing all that (must do it another time, OP!)

I'd agree with May/June for best weather.

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/03/2021 17:06

Scottish school holidays are generally mid June to mid August.
The Fringe festival is usually in August (not sure if its on this year). Everything gets booked up for miles around the city.

poppycat10 · 24/03/2021 17:12

May/June good, no midges (at least not in my experience).

Figgygal · 24/03/2021 17:13

I’ve been to Nairn in May and in early August both times great weather I believe it even prides it self and having its own microclimate

Darklane · 24/03/2021 17:26

I think they retained the teeth Confused

Some parts of Dumfries & Galloway do get the midges. You need to avoid still water & marshy areas.
East is best to avoid them. We go to Scotland a lot but tend to stick to the east between June & September

Beebumble2 · 24/03/2021 17:30

May /June is best for the sunniest weather in Dumfries and Galloway you’ll get the advantage of the warm Gulf Stream.
The midges don’t get going until around August. Mostly they’re inland and found near standing water and forested areas.

EdgedInBlue · 24/03/2021 17:33

If going to Pitlochry I'd go in October. Not only do you miss the worst of the midges and see the best tree colours, but it coincides with The Enchanted Forest (which is awesome)

Grumpycatsmum · 24/03/2021 17:39

May. Usually some sun. Midges not at full strength

TheBigBaboon · 24/03/2021 18:01

Been to Scotland (N500) and Lomond area over the last 2 years. We go in late Sept and early Oct and have been very lucky with the weather.

museumum · 24/03/2021 18:03

May and September are driest and sunniest. June ok into July but avoid late July and august as often wet.

reprehensibleme · 24/03/2021 18:07

May, but before last week to avoid midges. although your plans don't seem to include the west coast so you should be ok anyway. Late September, first week into October also usually good.

Corcory · 26/03/2021 20:20

Are you mixing up Eyemouth with Berwick upon Tweed perhaps? Nowhere is near Edinburgh so ignore the comment about everything getting booked up near there in the festival. Apart from that I concur as a caravanning Scot that May/June are best. We had 30 degrees at the end of May once in Arising on the West coast.

Chimeraforce · 26/03/2021 20:37

I've been in July (it doesn't seem to get dark) and August.
Luckily had great weather both times.
Stayed on loche linnhe and no midges... Luckily
