Who chooses new road names?

I'm fascinated by road names especially when they are an obvious theme. Example I used to live near Zodiac Road and off it were starsigns like Capricorn Way and Sagittarius Drive. Thankfully no Cancer Road though.

Who chooses road names? Some are obvious like School Lane but there is a Merrylegs Road not far from me.

I used to live near an old airfield and the roads were things like Spitfire Way, or named after famous pilots. I also lived near the spices area mentioned by PP- Paprika Close, Pepper Lane, Salt Way etc.

My old university was knocked down and the new roads were named after the students halls that were there.

Who named them though I have no clue...!

Butthole Lane in Shepshed (Leics)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/03/2021 19:42

There is a new- build village near where I live. The first houses there were built about 25 years ago. The Children at the newly built primary school were allowed to name the two lakes in the development. So they are Lake Sirius and Whomping Willow Lake.
There's also a Quidditch Lane where some of the house owners have called their houses "The Golden Snitch", "Quaffle House" etc.

My cousin works on a road called The Butts, opposite a pub called The Butts Retreat and a shop Butts Convenience Grin

I live on a new build estate ,the main road is named after the farmer and the streets after breeds of sheep

tinytoucan · 24/03/2021 20:58

I think my favourite is a street in Bristol called Cheers Drive after the Bristolian way to thank a bus driver. It tickled me when I read about it Grin

LemmysAceCard · 24/03/2021 21:29

We had 2 new bypasses built and both roads were named after the 2 victims of the great train robbery, local connection. Only one new road round here was named after a woman.

Podiki · 24/03/2021 21:35

I used to live on an estate named after famous film stars.

I then moved to a house that was originally built for miners. They allowed the miners to name the streets after their children. Mine was Enid which wasn't particularly glamorous!

I work in a land team for a developer and I've named a few, just submit to building control.

In medieval times, many villages would have had Butts - its a word for archery targets, and local Lords of the Manor had a duty to ensure they had enough men to fight on behalf of the king if needed. So they would practise on the butts.

When they were built on quite often the name survived in the new development.

ROund by Colindale station in north london, are new housing blocks on Guardian Way, Telegraph way, Courier and Observer close and Chronicle way, so all after newspapers I guess!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/03/2021 13:20

Come on, now, you know that isn't the whole story. I can well believe that the kids were allowed to make suggestions with adult guidance, but the fact that they didn't end up being called Lake Poopoo and Bumwilly Lake clearly indicates that they weren't allowed the final say Grin

Is there a highly-commended girls' school just around the corner on Bunty Lane? Grin

This is my village! I was coming on to post. We have more sensible area named after trees, weather types or planes that flew from the nearby airfield. I wish we had more of the Harry Potter theme! I also quite like mustang drive and gladiator way.
SwatchIt · 25/03/2021 14:34

There’s a few roads in Essex which are all names from LOTR/The Hobbit. So cute!

Just like Boaty McBoatface, their final choices were probably over ruled into what the organisers wanted.

Nearish to me are

Jackass lane
Ladies mile (its.9 of a mile)
Featherplumey lane

ALongHardWinter · 25/03/2021 15:15

I live near the Heathrow airport, and a lot of the roads around here, including my own,are to do with aviation. Apparently, literally over the road from where I live, was where Heathrow airport started,in the 1930s. I can think of 7 roads around here that are named after famous aviators or aeroplanes.

ALongHardWinter · 25/03/2021 15:17

I can remember seeing a road called Manhood Lane, many years ago when were driving around Sussex on holiday. I remember thinking Hmm

blobby10 · 25/03/2021 15:58

OH moved into a new build a couple of years ago and all the roads are named after men who died in the 1st World War and all the street names have a red rose next to the name. its quite a nice way to do it. The other 'new' estate near him which was built in the 80s is named after Castles so Carisbrooke Road, Hastings Road, Blenheim road, Balmoral Road etc. My estate is named after grand houses so Sandringham Road, Chatsworth Road, Hagley Drive, etc. Very boring compared to some of the brilliant names already mentioned!

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 25/03/2021 16:07

I thought it was usually the developers who proposed them, then the council approved them. Some councils have policies, I recall one having none named after living people.

Blueberryblueberry · 25/03/2021 16:31

Ahhh thanks to the pp confirming that Dogpool Lane still has the "l" missing Grin I used to live near there and it always made me smile

Shilbottle

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/03/2021 18:07

I'd never heard of Shilbottle before and have just looked at some of the images of the village signs - so pleased to see the villagers have done themselves proud!

Tempusfudgeit · 25/03/2021 18:16

Has anyone mentioned the road that the South Yorkshire Police HQ is on? Letsby Avenue, Sheffield 😀
