Who are you with and what package?

I am with Post Office, approx 30 a month, and it has been rubbish all day. I have acheived hardly anything and am fiddling constantly between mobile etc. to try and send emails. This is ridiculous. Our IT said there has been nationwide issues.

Will happily pay more if this will help, but is this the issue, or just too many people using it?

BT complete WiFi. Better since got their new router and discs.

MangoChutnee · 23/03/2021 18:09

I am wondering if the room could be an issue. Connection is in lounge. Office desk is 20 steps away in spare room with 2 internal walls in between.

Just reset router. Will try sitting on sofa with the laptop and see if it works.

I'm with Plusnet, it's £3 a month (yes, £3), never drops. I live alone but often two or three devices on it.

I have their second highest package. I did recently buy my own router as a new laptop would not connect at all through the Plusnet one and after a lot of research it turned out there is a clash with some Intel cards and BT/Plusnet software. Buying my own router was the easier option than sending the laptop back or changing broadband provider!

I've managed to connect my laptop through my 3 mobile hotspot! Actually seems reliable.

Will have to proceed with this, while I figure out a solution.

Swapped to Virgin last month after John Lewis started dropping out. No problems at all with Virgin.

Wow that is a good deal! Do you have the link to the router or similar one?

Sky fibre or whatever it has been rebranded to. Has coped with two of us connecting remotely and streaming/gaming/zooms for DS all at once

VanGoghsDog · 23/03/2021 18:28

Router:

It was recommended to me by a techy, seems pretty good. No idea if it's compatible with other devices though.

Re the broadband - it's £15.99 pm, discounted by £12.99. I pay for the phone up front annually, so it is just the BB.

LynetteScavo · 23/03/2021 19:03

EE - £44pm inc landline.

I was going to swap to cheaper but teens told me not to touch it. Apparently it's faster than any of their friends. 5 people can comfortably use it at the same time with no issues.

namechange53848593 · 23/03/2021 19:25

NOW broadband (same as the now tv people) £22.99 a month. No issues and multiple devices (well over the 10) in use together at most times.

TokyoSushi · 23/03/2021 19:26

BT it's their super duper one, we do pay £48 per month but that includes the landline & BT sport but it's almost never down.

MiloAndEddie · 23/03/2021 19:41

EE on their basic fibre deal for £24 a month. No landline package which suits us.
Honestly have no issues, zoom and Netflix at the same time at various points

stuckinarutatwork · 23/03/2021 19:42

We moved back to BT having had issues with Sky. Apparently (according to my neighbour Hmm), when the lines are busy because every bugger is at home on the internet all day, BT gets more 'use' of the line and so can maintain a better speed. Third parties that use the same BT lines (such as Sky, Post Office, Plus Net, TalkTalk etc.) get a poorer service as they don't pay for as much bandwidth or something. I have to say that the speed improved massively even though the quoted speed for both Sky and BT was the same on paper.

ElderMillennial · 23/03/2021 19:44

Now TV, which I think is provided by sky or BT

I have a wireless extender and plug in my computer which seems to help rather than relying on a wireless connection

superstar84 · 23/03/2021 19:49

Look at a mesh system if you've got thick walls

We're with virgin and the I internet is great in the room where the wireless router is but gets worse the further away you are

We paid £119 in currys for a tp mesh and the internet is so much better in the rest of the house now

superstar84 · 23/03/2021 19:51

£129 now but worth it, they have a warranty

We were able to get them paid for by Dh's work now he's at home at the time using our internet

NetballHoop · 23/03/2021 19:52

By some kind of divine intervention, we got full fibre to the house installed just before 1st lockdown. One year ago we became a 7 person household with three late teenagers and two twenty somethings all of who had exams and online lessons and we were also both working from home.

It held up with (almost) no whinging about speed. DH does techie stuff and set us up with some Ubiquiti boxes that send wifi everywhere, and some homeplugs that send wired internet everywhere. I have no idea how much he spent, but it was worth it.

We even managed evenings with various people streaming Netflix while others were gaming, and seven phones, 4 tablets etc. etc. all did their best to hog the connection.

Our ISP is Zen Internet, paid for through my work, and they have been excellent.

Had 1st lockdown come two weeks earlier I'm not sure we would all have survived.

Juk3 · 23/03/2021 19:56

The new BT fibre to the house, 500mbs downloads £35 a month. 100mbs is slightly cheaper and the max 1000mbs slightly more expensive. We have a 3 storey town house router by the front door as it is drilled in from the new box outside the front door, we get the full 500mbs in every single room I the house including the 3rd floor.

BashfulClam · 23/03/2021 20:25

Virgin is really reliable despite the bad rep it can get.

user1471538283 · 23/03/2021 20:50

We had Virgin fibre which when it worked was brilliant but it kept dropping. We've moved to Sky and I'm very impressed and it's cheaper!
