Big, sore hormonal zits on chin... What will help?

SatsumaFan · 22/03/2021 18:32

I've constantly got a big, throbbing under-the-skin spot/zit on my chin lately. So attractive. They wake me up in the night throbbing. I'm sure mask wearing contributing to the issue (I only wear one at a time before putting in the washing machine). I've got a whole cluster of about five right now.

Anyone got any cures or something to help please? They're so sore and unsightly! I'm 40 soon and my skin hasn't been this bad in years Sad

I've had these for years, (AM now 42) would cause huge, painful swellings on my face. Nothing stopped them. Almost 2 years ago I happened to have 1 whilst at the Dr for something else and I.asked her about it. I was prescribed something called epiduo, it's been a game changer, whilst using it I only had the odd spot, not swollen and painful and disappeared quickly. I would definitely recommend asking the Dr about it. Only issue is you can't use if pregnant.

La Roche Posay Effaclar range. I heard about it on here!

I'm 36, was getting these weekly. I think not commuting helps too.

12 months on using Effaclar now and haven't had one of these zits since. Amazing.

Also use disposable masks and change frequently

It's on offer now too.

SatsumaFan · 22/03/2021 19:08

Thank you both! Will call doctors tomorrow and seek advice.

I've heard of the Effaclar range before on here and have deliberated in the past. I just got a big bottle of Elemis tri-enzyme resurfacing face wash for Christmas though so want to use that up first before buying more stuff Smile

Have you tried a hydrocolliod bandage on it?

AlexaNeverListens · 22/03/2021 19:14

I had this in my late thirties. Cystic acne. I've actually hit scars now as my GP refused to refer me to a dermatologist for over a year and a half. She had me on antibiotics for nearly all that time and various lotions and potions. Eventually I went private and was prescribed Roacutine. I never got another one and I'm now 47. It was a miracle cure for me. I was so conscious of them and the pain was horrible. I couldn't even speak or eat some days.

SatsumaFan · 22/03/2021 19:26

@ShivRoy I've not heard of one of those? Will have a Google now.

@AlexaNeverListens oh wow, that sounds awful! You poor thing Sad I've heard of roacutine. Maybe it's really expensive hence NHS GP's reluctance to prescribe? Sorry you had to suffer so long.

If you haven't tried this already ask your GP for Zineryt lotion. It's got erythromycin and zinc as the active ingredients, one sorts the infection and the other helps with skin healing.

AAT65 · 22/03/2021 19:56

Roaccutane can only be prescribed by a dermatologist not a GP. If you are of child bearing age you will be pregnancy tested before each prescription and have regular blood tests. It causes serious birth defects and is linked to depression. It has its place for severe cystic acne but there are alternatives to try first. Depending on your age you may be suffering from Rosacea rather than acne. It still causes pustules.

Jaffajam · 22/03/2021 19:57

Have you tried a hot flannel on them OP? I generally get one huge beast on my chin once a month and a flannel soaked in hot water (not so hot you get burned) really helps. It somehow dries it out.

Rae36 · 22/03/2021 20:07

I use Acnecide. You used to have to buy it from a pharmacy but I saw it just sitting on the shelf lady time I was in Boots

mrsnibblesisahero · 22/03/2021 20:31

Place mark I need these tips!

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/03/2021 20:41

This is exactly the sort of thing you see your dr about. There’s lots of treatments to try before they prescribe Always ask how long to give each treatment.

I did take roaccutane and have lovely skin now.

It’s just a bacterial skin infection at the end of the day.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/03/2021 20:43

Roaccutane not pricey, about £30 a month or so for 4-6 months. Dhs blood thinners are £53 a month and he’s on them for the rest of his life to put it into context

Clickncollect · 22/03/2021 21:03

As per PP, I recommend La Roche Posay Effaclar range. I am honestly shocked at the difference it has made to my skin and it’s not expensive either. It took a good four weeks to work though so be patient if you do use it and I’m now on week six and I have no spots at all which is a miracle as I have suffered with hormonal spots for years as well as multiple other issues (folliculitis and dermatitis but they were sorted with creams prescribed by my GP). Unfortunately I have quite a lot of scarring but I think that is improving so will see what happens over time.

Xiaoxiong · 22/03/2021 21:05

I've also been horribly broken out for the last 6 weeks - the worst acne I've had in years, all along my jawline, chin and temples. I'd just started using the Cerave smoothing face wash hoping it would eliminate all the little rough bits of skin on my face, but instead I got a crop of massive cystic acne along my jaw! I thought that was what was breaking me out so I stopped - but the acne just keeps coming weeks after stopping Sad it's really getting me down now.

SunsetBeetch · 22/03/2021 21:29

A couple of cheap solutions that have really worked for me:

Boots Tea Tree & Witch Hazel Blemish Stick - shrinks them up really fast.

And Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturiser - I've hardly had any breakouts since I started using this regularly.

I have the skincare routine of a teenager Smile

splishsplashsploshsplishsplash · 22/03/2021 21:33

I have exactly the same issue. Ever since having my second baby I have these and was googling this evening to see if there was anything I could try! Watching this with interest.

bedtimeshoes · 22/03/2021 21:47

Place marking for later

BrightSideRightSide · 22/03/2021 21:52

I have cystic acne that started when I came off the pill. I used the La Roche Posay set mentioned by previous posters. While it didn’t make my acne worse, it didn’t improve my skin either.

I’m currently using the Pixie glow tonic twice per day together with a product called Faace period - I apply that as a mask before going to sleep. This was just a random combo but by chance it’s worked for me. I only have two spots on my chin at the moment (mid period) and none of the usual painful cysts on my jawline. I’m also using a Cerave cleanser but it’s early days using that to tell if it’s made a difference.

I guess it’s trial and error - in my case for two years before finding something that worked.

Hope you find a regimen that works for you!

SatsumaFan · 22/03/2021 22:12

Thanks all! A few suggestions to think about.

I'm almost 40, came off the pill a year ago but skin has only been really bad the past 4-6 weeks I'd say. Sounds like Roaccutane is only to be used as a last resort in severe cases.

Going to try and pop to my local pharmacy tomorrow to see if they have this

Balanceme congested skin serum clears up a lot of nasties. I’m a bit old to get hormonal breakouts but if I get a sniff of anything it clears it up

Charles11 · 22/03/2021 22:26

Could they be diet related at all?
Mine are triggered by dairy and nuts.
