How do you keep your butter from.being to hard to spread when it's not summer?

My house isn't cold really but my butter is hard. And yes I do have a butter dish ( thanks to you lot . A very nice whole one!) And it's out the fridge but I can't spread it.

What am I missing

If it's for toast hold the open side over the toaster while it's cooking!! Just enough melts for 2 slices!!

CatsHairEverywhere · 22/03/2021 09:25

I’ve got a butter dish. Provided you’re not using a salt free version, butter dishes can keep your butter both soft and fresh for up to 3 days out of the fridge. You need to make sure it’s not in a place that the sun will be on though cause it does go rancid that way 🤢

No, this isn’t an ad for butter dishes btw! Only reason we have one is because DS1 has ASD and can’t stand marg!

DartmoorDoughnut · 22/03/2021 09:25

Cut off as much as I think I need and bung it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds

Sorry, as to what you’re missing: how long is it out the fridge for before you try to spread it? 12hrs is usually needed before it’ll be soft enough (ime)

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/03/2021 09:26

I do have a dish. It's not in direct sun

I can attempt to microwave I hadn't thought of that.

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/03/2021 09:26

Its never in the fridge

OP posts:
CatsHairEverywhere · 22/03/2021 09:26

Oh, and cheaper butter is usually better too

MaryIsA · 22/03/2021 09:29

Have this problem too. I find if we leave it near the radiator in the kitchen in winter it's kind of soft enough to spread when we get up in the morning.

Or on the windowledge that seems a bit warmer too.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 22/03/2021 09:29

@Whatwouldscullydo

Butter dishes are quite insulating, so leave the lid off until its soft enough. Then it should stay ok to spread. Be careful with the microwave. It goes from too hard to liquid in seconds and can look hard still, but actually be quite soft inside!
piglet81 · 22/03/2021 09:30

Lurpak spreadable is what you want.

MyOtherProfile · 22/03/2021 09:36

Same problem here. Butter in pot on the kitchen top all year round. Too hard to spread in winter, too runny in summer. Perfect for a couple of months in between!

MyOtherProfile · 22/03/2021 09:37

@piglet81

Lurpak spreadable is what you want.
Ewwww no. It's not proper butter. It's got rapeseed oil and water in it.
Whatwouldscullydo · 22/03/2021 09:43

I wasn't keen on lurpak anyway

Tbh I'm not a butter fan but after thr flora debacle and the fact the recipe changed and it tasted crap having been the only spread I've ever liked in years I figured I'd go for butter

After trial and error I have settled on president salted as a fave although currently I have tesco West Country butter with salt crystals.

I will try leaving the lid off and stick it on top of the coffee machine

I keep my butter in the packet in a drawer most of the time. It's fine and always spreadable. In summer I have to put it in the fridge. I'd love a butter dish, not got round to buying one yet. Watching with interest.

Sevensilverrings · 22/03/2021 09:49

You can get a french pottery butter crock. It has a double skin you fill with water, and in the summer it keeps butter cold, but in winter it keeps it spreadable. It also keeps it fresh and hygienic while not in fridge. Genius.

Mosaic123 · 22/03/2021 09:50

Put enough butter on a plate sliced thinly. It will be soft fairly soon.

Sevensilverrings · 22/03/2021 09:50

Like this.

idontlikealdi · 22/03/2021 09:51

Microwave - 5 seconds. I also cut the blocks in half so I have half in the butter dish so less to stay cold. Last summer it had to go back in the fridge as it was just so hot so ended up in the microwave again!

Lurpak spreadable is absolutely awful and not even butter!

Mosaic123 · 22/03/2021 09:51

You could buy a butter curler! DC might like that.

idontlikealdi · 22/03/2021 09:52

@Sevensilverrings

I want one!
CrystalMaisie · 22/03/2021 09:53

I keep my butter in a small Tupperware type box, in the bread bin, and it’s always easy to spread.

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/03/2021 09:54

Oooh that French pot is pretty

I like the sound of a butter curler dd2 would probably steal it Grin

OP posts:
OlivePenderghast · 22/03/2021 09:58

@Sevensilverrings I am definitely going to buy one of those! I always keep my butter in a butter dish but it’s always too hard for sandwiches.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 22/03/2021 09:58

Start buying ghee. It is clarified butter, basically liquid butter. Tastes like butter (it is butter!) but can be poured and spread. Life changing if you have a lot of sandwiches to do.
