Work related insubordination!

Alena03 · 21/03/2021 19:49

Kid works in the shop, he is 16. Manager told him to do something at 2pm, kid said that he is going for break as he is hungry. Place doesn’t pay for breaks, manager said that he can go later( his been at work for 3 hours, but works only 6). So kid been pulled in the office and told that this accident go on his file as insubordination. Why?

Why? Because in retail you don't dictate when you personally take your breaks. You don't refuse to perform a task when set my by a manager because you're hungry and inform them instead you're off on your break.

Eh, because he didn’t do as requested by a manager?

Have you posted about this before? I seem to remember a poster whose son worked in a shop, and was a feckless little sod. But the poster thought he should be treated like he was at school still.

movingadvice · 21/03/2021 19:59

Whoever is the parent of the kid should tell the kid to sort his attitude out. I used to work in retail and failure to follow a managers instructions was gross misconduct - I.e, sackable.

Kitkat151 · 21/03/2021 19:59

‘Kid’ was in the wrong....it’s not up to him when he has his break...it’s the managers decision.....‘kid’ is not going to last long in a job with that attitude

nancy75 · 21/03/2021 20:00

As a former retail manager, ‘kid’ would have been told not to bother coming back from break

ScarfaceCwaw · 21/03/2021 20:01

Because you don't announce your own breaks in retail. You get told when you can take one. And when you don't do what your manager tells you, they fire you.

RevolutionRadio · 21/03/2021 20:02

Because he was asked to do something and didn't do it.

Imagine if everyone one just took a break when they felt like it!

EnjoyingTheSilence · 21/03/2021 20:03

Kids needs to be told to sort the attitude. If you are the parent, you’re doing doing your kids any favours

VettiyaIruken · 21/03/2021 20:04

Did you miss out a bit between kid saying he's going for lunch and kid getting a warning for insubordination?
Something like
You can't go at 2
Kid mouths off, has an attitude or goes anyway
Kid gets pulled into office and gets a warning.

VettiyaIruken · 21/03/2021 20:06

I ask because being told no and replying ok fair enough and doing the task assigned to you and taking your break later seems unlikely to end in a warning for insubordination.
I feel like there was something he did or said that you have omitted.

Whynotnowbaby · 21/03/2021 20:07

What don’t you understand? Did her have a break scheduled at 2.00 and just phrased it badly to his manager? In that case I could understand that he could have been politer but was just trying to explain that he was actually scheduled to be on break right now, if he just unilaterally decided to wander off, of course its insubordination, have you never had a job yourself? That’s the only way I could imagine you wouldn’t get it.

Alena03 · 21/03/2021 20:08

Fair comments, just gonna show it to the kid, it probably will stop him sulking. Thank you ladies!

From gov.uk:

Rest breaks at work

Workers have the right to one uninterrupted 20 minute rest break during their working day, if they work more than 6 hours a day. This could be a tea or lunch break.

I read this as for a six hour shift, legally, his manager does not have to give him any break at all. So if he wants a break, he has to ask, not tell, and he has no right to dictate when he takes it.

Teens (B**ts) like this spoil things for so many young people. Two major employers of 16 to 18 years old here stopped because of the crap they got from entitled teens (and the parents who got feed a pack of lies by the said teen) like this. Sadly many hardworking teens lost their hours that the income was used to save for college accommodation etc. The employers found it easier to hire agency staff rather than local teens.
