School uniform from compulsory suppliers

I know this was always a thing - that a school had a tie-in with a certain supplier.
When I was at school in the 1990s the school uniform supplier was in the posh area of town and was more expensive than general shops like bhs or M and S (I dont remember supermarkets generally selling clothes back then) You could buy a tie or badge from school and then get your uniform at the school supplier or elsewhere. (And it was an easily available bog standard colour)
Now all the schools in our area (including some nursery schools) seem to be moving to compulsory items that can only be bought at the one supplier.
The uniforms are good quality and available in a wide range of sizes but it irks me that the supplier has the monopoly. We live in a fairly affluent area and everyone seems to just pitch up and hand over enough money to buy a small car buy everything at the local shop without question.(The shop has existed since the beginning of time as well so people are very defensive if you question it) I feel that uniform for state school should be available to buy for a range of budgets. I'm totally fine with school specifying styles of trousers or skirts and acceptable length but that you ideally could buy a black/navy/bottle green skirt in harrods, or asda ....or anywhere in between. (Some of the schools have uniforms of such weird colours and styles it would be literally impossible to try and buy elsewhere)

I bought as much as I could of DDs secondary uniform from elsewhere, mainly because a white shirt or a jumper, for example could be bought more cheaply when M and S have a uniform sale. But the blazer, skirt, tie and pe kit had to come from the compulsory shop

Now DS primary have revealed they are changing to compulsory supplier uniform. The letter from the HT said it would make them look smarter and the amount in lost property suggests the kids dont look after their uniform, so the new smart uniform will help.(I have seen and smelled the lost property box at secondary school - it is not in anyway supporting their argument that kids will not lose/mislay logo-ed or more expensive items!Hmm)
It also said it would cost the same as before. This is really not true. A branded polo shirt is £8. I used to buy plain ones from matalan in packs of 3 for less than that. There is also logo-ed pe kit tshirts, shorts, skirts, hoodies, socks - everything!! They used to have a branded tshirt and the rest could be bought fairly cheaply elsewhere.

I feel quite strongly that especially at the current time when more people are being made redundant or had reduced income that there should not be a monopoly on school.uniform suppliers. Do the schools get a backhander from them?
A few years ago I thought that an MP was looking into this to try to prevent that kind of monopoly, but if our town is anything to go by it's worse than before!

I agree. And totally disagree with your heads reasoning- kids don't care how much their uniform costs because they don't pay for it! Therefore, they will not take better care of it.
Maybe you can start up a second hand uniform sale page on FB? We have one it works a treat.

They are actually reviewing the law on this right now. I think they’re going to stop schools being able to request branded/certain styles of clothing. Though in my dd’s secondary school the only shops you can get the right colour clothes are trutex uniform shop and John Lewis, so I’m not sure it’ll help me much.

Uniform is passed on for my DDs school and I have given away or sold ,and bought a few items from there via fb.

I hate branded buy in one shop uniform. Could you contact the school (maybe get a few parents together)

MyDcAreMarvel · 21/03/2021 16:29

@Grandslam21 no all that law will do is mean suppliers need to tender every five years. It’s full of things like try and and aim. Meaningless.

This has been against the government code of practice which was introduced (I think) durung the Blair years.

But there is zero enforcement against bad practice which breaches the code, and breaches continue merrily.

We don't actually need a new law (there were muttering durung Give's tenure). What we need is enforcement of the existing code

At DDs school, it was the loged jumpers that were always getting lost, because they all looked the same. The plain ones from various supermarkets were easier to find in the jumper box.

Have a look at the work MP Mike Amesbury is doing - he has raised this in parliament and it is being followed up

As an update, I went to the uniform supplier today to get some items that DD has grown out of. I noticed one of the school blazers for a local school , thankfully not my DCs school (but not private) was £97.50! Shock which I think its outrageous for one item of compulsory uniform.

When I have mentioned on parents groups that I think it's not great that 1 supplier has the monopoly, most people defended it because the shop has been there since Jesus was born, and it's a family business so obviously that makes it much more affordableConfused

Another real novelty idea:

DD, 13, so Y8/9 during lockdown, managed nearly a year of remote learning and keeping her grades up, her commitment to learning high while wearing jeans, hoddies and T-shirts.

And before anyone comes with "but then they will be bullied about their clothes", she was ridiculued about her phone and her friend about her style of bag. It just moves from clothing to other items.

Is the school still under local authority control? If so there will be LA appointed governors, if any are councillors you should contact them.

fizbosshoes · 12/04/2021 21:11

DS school is part of a multi academy trust?
A friend is a former governor and she says the school do get a % from the shop so its partly financial.
The 6th form at DDs school insist on suits and "business wear" regardless of subject. Suits and ties are totally unsuitable for practical subjects like art, woodwork, food tech etc. A friend said her son was pouring concrete the other day and still expected to wear a business suit. It seems bonkers!
