Hi mums, my 4 year old had an upper tract infection and had a high temperature I took him to A&E and they told me that. Now his temperature has started to improve a bit after few days but now he is refusing to walk and keep on telling me he has sore legs and can't put any weight on them. I took him back to A&E yesterday and they said it's due to the infection he has had. I'm just looking to know how long before he starts walking agian on his legs? And has someone else had this kind of experience. It's making me feel really sad to see him like this. Thanks

Can you take him to an out of hours GP? I would not necessarily take the word of a rushed A and E doctor. It sounds quite severe and he hasn't improved.

LIZS · 21/03/2021 15:15

Dd had a "hip cold" after a viral infection. A few days of nurofen resolved it.

Yes, it happened to my dc. He had an infection and recovered. Then started complaining of pain in his legs. He ended up admitted to the hospital little over a week, and was fine and walking when discharged, but had check up in a months or so. It was years ago, and he is totally fine now.

Pinksundownbeast · 21/03/2021 15:41

Thanks for your replies. I did take him
to A&E yesterday and doctors checked his legs and hips they did blood tests all came back fine and then we were discharged at night. But I'm still concerned because he is not walking. I will speak to my GP once they open tomorrow. Smile

I would definitely get checked out.my six year old Ds had this when he was two. Was in hospital for 4 weeks. Went from being fine to very poorly, he's fully recovered now the only thing. You'd notice is his speech is slightly different

Pinksundownbeast · 21/03/2021 15:58

Thanks I will definitely call my GP tomorrow

Good plan, do let me know how you get on when you can. I'm sure it'll be as the pp have said, but best to get checked out.

Tronkmanton · 21/03/2021 17:55

My DS had this when he was 7/8 - it was horrific. We took him to out of hours GP which was in hospital & they said it was fairly common after flu/viral infection and sent him home. It took a couple more days for him to start walking again, very scary. I’ve made sure he has the flu vaccination every year since as don’t want a repeat. I’d definitely take him back in the morning if no improvement.

Pinksundownbeast · 21/03/2021 18:17

Thanks will do. for sure it is scary because he can't walk at the moment

Can you get him to stand up? Can he stand up as normal? If he gets any other symptoms before tomorrow I'd be taking him back to a and e. My gp had to insist the children's ward had him in for observation, the were trying to say just give him calpol and ibroprofen which we had done for 3 days, after about six hours being admitted he kept sort of dropping off to sleep then his arms/ legs and body would jerk him awake again. This went on during the night. Initially they though he was putting it on coz he wasn't feeling well, wasn't til another consultant came in and got him to try and stand and he literally fell to the floor, after me repeatedly telling them he's normally running all over the place, that he got him a MRI and lumber puncture , by which time he was in and out of consciousness and didn't have to be sedated for.
I don't say that to scare you but always trust your instincts, you know them best and if you get checked out and all is fine, that's great and what you want.

Pinksundownbeast · 21/03/2021 20:25

I did tell them he can't stand he is usually running around and never sitting even for one moment doctors just checked his hips and all joints on his legs and feet. He stood on his tipe toes for few seconds before he fell on the floor and they said they are not worried because he can put weight on his toes and they discharged him yesterday. I am still worried and don't know what to do. We were there for 8 hours they did his blood and it came back normal they said they didn't find anything in his blood .We also stayed at the hospital the night before due to very high temperature

What kind of treatment they did if you can remember please? Thanks

Positivelysober · 21/03/2021 20:45

He had six canulas, with antivirals, antibiotics and steroids too. We had to wean him off the steroids over 3 months as was on a strong dose. Think he had 4 mris, 3 lumber punctures and 2 CT scans. He was a case of watch and wait which was hard. When he came round from being unconscious he couldn't move at all apart from his eyes, then few days later his fingers, until on day 10 of coming round at 6am he took my hand, slid off the bed and slow ploded up the length of the ward. Best day ever.
It sounds like they did do a good check on him, maybe keep a close eye on him tonight and and call the go if you need to in the morning.

Positivelysober · 21/03/2021 20:47

I'm sure what happened to my ds is very rare, no intention to cause you extra worry, and before he was ill having already got three older children, I never knew they could loose the ability to walk with a viral infection, and usually just lasts a few days.

Pinksundownbeast · 21/03/2021 21:01

It's my first experience too like this I have other 2 older kids too. Thanks alot for the information. I will definitely keep an eye on it. He is gone to see out of hour GP just now. Fingers crossed.

Positivelysober · 21/03/2021 21:07

That's good, least you'll have some peace of mind tonight after he's been seen. Update when you can. Will be thinking of you.

Pinksundownbeast · 21/03/2021 21:57

The at out of hour GP also said can't understand why he is not walking because there is nothing wrong with his hips and joints same as A&E . He is keep on pointing at the back of his legs just behind his knees that he is sore there.

Pinksundownbeast · 21/03/2021 21:58

Thanks so much to all the mums who replied. I'm just hoping that it will be over soon and he will be running again.

Positivelysober · 22/03/2021 15:12

How is he doing today? Hope he's running round the place as normal 🙂

Pinksundownbeast · 22/03/2021 16:27

Hi ,he is walking a little bit today on his toes where before he didn't even get of the sofa. I am not sure if this how it should be? I did contact my GP today and he said give him couple of days. If he is not walking then we will do further tests. Thanks for asking

OP posts:
Positivelysober · 22/03/2021 18:38

That's good news he's a bit better than yesterday, and also that they will do further tests if there's no improvement. I don't know how things should be, but sounds like he's going in the right direction to me. 🙂

Pinksundownbeast · 22/03/2021 18:58

Thanks
