School and what appears to be a cold

Daughter is in reception and seems to have come down with a cold overnight. Very blocked up, no cough, no temperature. If it stays that way overnight and feels well enough in herself does she go in or do I need to get her tested? A blocked up nose isn’t a covid symptom.

It’s fine for her to go in.

Queenfreak · 21/03/2021 14:24

She would be sent home here. However its ridiculous, and she should be OK going in.

PoptartPoptart · 21/03/2021 15:10

Get her tested op.
My friend and her daughter both had what they thought to be heavy colds but turned out to be Covid.
Blocked nose and tiredness were their only symptoms - they had none of the classic signs like temperature or a cough.
They got off lightly really, but if they hadn’t been tested they could have unknowingly passed it onto other people who may have suffered badly.

Also meant to say it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Covid tests are free and easy to arrange and the worst that’s going to happen is that it’s a false alarm and she would have missed a day or two of Reception.
It’s not much hassle really and could potentially stop the spread.

Orchidflower1 · 21/03/2021 15:13

Get her tested today and you may get the result before school.

Amorousfrog · 21/03/2021 15:13

Will you have to be off work?

peboh · 21/03/2021 15:14

A blocked up nose may not be an officially symptom when you Google, however I know of several people (my niece included) who tested positive for covid despite only having cold symptoms. Better safe than sorry op.

GrumpySausage · 21/03/2021 15:14

Do you have any of the LFT tests? My son was similar with blocked nose and a headache and I did an LFT test on him which came back negative within 30 minutes.
This gave me the peace of mind to send him to school the next day.

Sandytoes86 · 21/03/2021 15:19

My son is like this , also in reception . We have tested him to be on the safe side.

PoptartPoptart · 21/03/2021 15:58

The lateral flow tests are more designed to pick up asymptomatic cases.
If your DD is showing signs of being unwell it is best to get her properly tested at a testing site.

They are in the way they are being used (I.e. mass testing) but will still pick up a positive case.

I did one on myself last weekend because I had a bit of a sore throat & like PP said it was just for peace of mind.

Passthecake30 · 21/03/2021 16:11

Could it be hayfever? I’ve had a sore throat/stuffed up ears and nose all week. And insanely itchy eyes.

FishWithoutABike · 21/03/2021 16:13

Use a lateral flow test.

IHeartKingThistle · 21/03/2021 16:13

We had a student sent in poorly last week because the mum thought it was just a cold. Positive test. 90 kids sent home.

ThePricklySheep · 21/03/2021 16:14

What are your school’s guidelines? We had really clear ones in the autumn term that said something about cold symptoms. And then they changed them so i can’t actually remember which way round it was.

CoffeeWithCheese · 21/03/2021 16:15

Depends on your school really. DD2 was like this last weekend and we took her for a test but the teaching staff in that class are horrendously neurotic and would have freaked out and imploded in a puff of disinfectant if someone cleared their throat - I didn't want to make the school environment any more hellish than it is in that year group, so sent her back with a screenshot of the negative test email.

MichonnesBBF · 21/03/2021 16:22

Just my experience: we arrived at work one Wednesday, 10:00 am we hear the news we have to close due to positive case, off everyone goes.
Messages start coming in that parents had decided to get their kids tested as a precaution as had shown signs of slight cold. Class of 33 we know of 11 who got tested: 3 of those 11 were positive and we are still awaiting a couple more results. As yet teaching staff/lunch supervisor and cleaner have Continued to test negative.
Through this I don't think it would hurt at all to test them before going back to school.

doctorhamster · 21/03/2021 16:44

Technically she doesn't need a test and can go to school. My dds only covid symptom was a blocked up nose though so I would probably get a test.

Imbubmblesparent · 21/03/2021 16:46

Thanks everyone. Sounds like a resounding need to test. I can get a lateral test no problem. Thanks for the advice. May be a good idea to do me too so I don’t spread anything around the office just in case.

Ours added more than the usual three symptoms as they learnt from positive tests so they would be asked to test and sent home here.

I wouldn’t send in I’ll anyway currently, we need to be careful plus a test no one can say it’s not covid so shouldn’t be guessing.

comfortablyNumb2021 · 21/03/2021 18:15

I had this last week with my DC in reception. Due to my work I get regular LFT to bring home. I did DC, me and DH. We all came back negative and the school were fine. I would however test either PCR or LFT to be safe.

y0rkier0se · 21/03/2021 18:16

I’m a teacher & usually would say without any of the three main symptoms send her in, but after having what I’ve thought to be a bad cold for two days and despite negative lateral flow results, I tested positive on a PCR yesterday. Please test just to be safe x
