Books for a seven year old girl?

I know a little bookworm with a birthday coming up and would like to buy her some books.

What books have your seven year olds enjoyed? Both classics and modern.

She loves reading, so her reading skills are advanced for her age. She could probably manage books aimed at slightly older children too.

Dd is nearly 7. Current faves are:

Princess in black series
Narnia
Harry potter book 1 (reading with me)
The ickabog
Jolley Rogers reading books series

Dd still reads big picture books, particularly anything by nadia shireen.

Forgot to say DD is an advanced reader too.

Forgot to add pippi longstocking!

The Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary here. They are not very well known in the UK, but they are pretty ageless and not really US specific apart from a bit of vocabulary. They are gentle, funny stories of a little girl growing up, seen through her eyes. They start when she is 4, and stop when she is 10. I loved them when I was 7-8-9, and have just finished reading them to my DD at a similar age.

RaspberryBlonde · 21/03/2021 11:13

My 7 year old DD also loves Pippi Longstocking and has also enjoyed the 'Pea' books by Susie Day. They are possibly for a slightly older audience, but I wouldn't say inappropriate for a 7 year old.

We're currently reading a book called Eight Princesses and a Magic Mirror. It would make a nice gift as it has lovely illustrations. The princesses are not conventional 'beautiful' princesses either so it's a bit different.

She is also enjoying Horrid Henry at the moment although I'm not sure I'd recommend it!

The faraway tree.
Fantastic mr fox.
Winnie the witch short stories - 4 stories (around 30 pages per story and 4 stories in one book). We have Winnie goes for gold and Winnie adds magic at the moment.
We have charlottes web on the side lines.

Current favourites of just turned 8yo and a 9yo
Dotty Detective

Isadora Moon
Atticus Claw
The Princess Rules
Childrens versions of Sherlock Holmes
Harry Potter (with a parent)
Hotel Flamingo
Fabio the Great Flamingo Detective
Adventures of Mr Penguin
Zoe's Rescue Zoo
Animal Ark
Unicorn Academy
Malory Towers/St Clares
Worst Witch

My house resembles a library with two bookworms and an indulgent Grandmother sending them regular parcels from a website called Books2Door... Lots of cheap box sets.

I used to love Ramona books but I'd forgotten about them. Thanks for the reminder!

Ivy and Bean
The Naughtiest Unicorn
Mummy Fairy and Me

HereBeFuckery · 22/03/2021 23:43

The Wizards of Once by Cressida Cowell. My 7yo DD has just finished it (alternating reading together and her reading alone), and she adored it. Vocab mostly fine with a couple of challenging words here and there, and the story is fantastic!

Xmasbaby11 · 22/03/2021 23:45

My 7yo dd is obsessed with Jacqueline Wilson and is working her way through those!

freesolo · 23/03/2021 12:12

My 7 year old absolutely loves the Mr Majjeika books and reads these independently. She also reads the Worst Witch books but mr majeika definitely the favourite

GrouchyKiwi · 23/03/2021 12:20

My nearly-7 year old loves

Worst Witch
Famous Five
Secret Seven
Zoey and Sassafrass
Ada Lace
The Narnia books

Her 9-year-old sister loves all of the above, plus:
Little Women
Anne of Green Gables (she's read the whole series and enjoyed even the ones where Anne is all grown up)
Horrible Histories
Which Witch by Eva Ibbotson

And I've just bought all of Onjali Rauf's books, which look excellent, and Who Let The Gods Out by Maz Evans, which looks hilarious and fun.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 23/03/2021 12:29

Cressida Cowell How to train your Dragon. Great stories! And Harry Potter!

BlueChampagne · 23/03/2021 12:52

Definitely Worst Witch
The later How To Train Your Dragons have an excellent female character.
Emma Fischel's Witchworld series
Sophie and the Shadow Woods
First Aid for Fairies (and other Fabled Creatures)
101 Dalmatians

thelegohooverer · 23/03/2021 13:17

The Secrets of Grindlewood series is very compelling, though perhaps a touch creepy depending on the temperament of the child.

The Rover Adventures by Roddy Doyle is a lot of fun.

MinnieMinutiae · 24/03/2021 20:32

How about The Babysitters Little Sister series by Ann M. Martin? The little girl in the stories is about 7 years old and they are lots of fun. (When she is 8 or 9 she could then try The Babysitters Club books... there are hundreds in the series and usually available from the library!)

DipSwimSwoosh · 24/03/2021 20:39

My 7 year old loves The Faraway Tree series, The Little Prince, Roald Dahl, Black Beauty. I wouldn't let a 7 year old read Jacqueline Wilson unless I read it first.

Phalarope · 24/03/2021 20:43

My bookworm 7 yr old loves the Adam Kay kids’ book, Kay’s Anatomy - endlessly telling me bits of biology she’s gleaned from it. Nice to have some non fiction to dip into, I think.

Onjali Rauf’s The Night Bus Hero was a recent hit, as was Roald Dahl’s Boy.

HaroldandGeorge · 24/03/2021 21:09

My 7 year old dd is obsessed with Captain Underpants and adores the Dogman books by Dav Pilkey. She also enjoys Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate. We have read Flat Stanley, Tracy Beaker, Mr Majeika, Little Miss Pepperpot and lots of the Roald Dahl books. Non fiction wise, you can’t go wrong with Horrible Histories.

Medianoche · 24/03/2021 21:12

The Reeve and McIntyre books are just brilliant for that age: Pugs of the Frozen North is my favourite, but they’re all excellent.

Dunairbeanat · 24/03/2021 21:13

All the shoes books by Noel Streatfield particularly Ballet Shoes.
Still read it now every few years.
