Help! Which white Satinwood?

We are not brilliant DIY-ers but want to repaint our house.

There seem to be very mixed reviews online for Satinwood paints.

We want to paint doors/skirting/banisters. It's a small ex housing association house so nothing fancy. But still want it to look tidy.

Is pure brilliant white the best bet for looking "clean."

And Dulux/Crown? Someone else? They all seem to get some negative reviews!

Just done a Wardrobe in Dulux trade white satinwood. Brilliant!

Whatwouldnanado · 20/03/2021 21:57

We like a warmer finish. Timeless is great.

SavingsQuestions · 20/03/2021 21:58

That's the one we were thinking of using.... some of the online reviews suggest it peeling.

Our staircase has been painted before. I am wondering about sanding it and using an undercoat/primer even though the tin says it doesn't need it just to help it stay on...?!

But as I said we have pretty much no clue.

I wish I could go into people's rooms to see what they look like!

I wondered about a different white - our house is small and wondered if an offwhite would just look dirty. But I get confused about whites too....

I want it just to look okay...

Brilliant white always. It looks so bright, clean and fresh. Deluxe gives good results.

SavingsQuestions · 20/03/2021 22:07

I think we will go Brilliant White.

Google is giving me "Dulux trade diamond satinwood" is that longerlasting? Or harder to go on?

Also Crown or Dulux quickdry satinwood.

We aren't expert painters so a bit worried about drips etc. However it currently looks neglected so anything will be better than nothing!

Ive never used satinwood before. My whole house is wood stained. But my friend is an avid fan of it and has painted her own home plus 2 holiday cottages do must be great as they do get used (well ore-covid!)

Dulux trade diamond satinwood

This stuff is great. It would be good to sand it a bit first, just to rough it up and put it on thinly to avoid drips

SavingsQuestions · 20/03/2021 22:54

Thanks Freddiefox. Do you know what the difference is between dulux trade and dulux normal? Both seem to be in B and Q I think... will the trade one be harder for a normal person to use/not streak?

We were thinking of sanding and then using an undercoat/primer as feeling abit paranoid about the old surface...

I wish I had a relative who Knows Things! Thankyou mumsnet 😁

My decorators swear by Dulux Once

Freddiefox · 21/03/2021 01:20

@SavingsQuestions

Sorry no idea, I’ve just used it as it was the one available in wickes. I’ve used the trade emulsion paint for walls and it seems thicker so maybe it needs less coats so is faster to apply.

Dulux Dona primer too which I’m happy with.
I love painting so my tips would be, have a wet cloths with you for any bits your not happy with and tape along the edges where you don’t want paint.

And don’t let your brushes dry.

SavingsQuestions · 21/03/2021 10:44

Thanks. He's off to B and Q later so will suggest Dulux trade diamond stainwood then!

Water-based paint will peel if it is applied directly on top of oil-based paint. If your woodwork hasn’t been painted in a few years it is likely that the paint on it is oil-based. Water-based is much easier to use and does a good job so you can still use it, you just need to lightly sand the existing paint, then apply a primer. I always use Zinsser 1,2,3. When the primer is dry, apply your new paint and enjoy your newly painted woodwork! The reviews about paint peeling are probably a result of people not using a primer as a bridge between old oil-based paint and new water-based paint. Btw, I learned this the hard way!

SavingsQuestions · 21/03/2021 11:11

Oooh that is exactly what I needed to know. Our woodwork hasnt been painted since the stone age...

That makes so much sense. We had been thinking primer but the paint tin says it doesnt need it. It would make sense that only applies if its on top of similar paint.

So sanding, clean, primer, dulux diamond sarinwood?

Cloudwire · 21/03/2021 11:17

Yes, I would say that would work well. Good luck, I bet it will look lovely when it’s finished.

MalingeringMary · 21/03/2021 11:19

Zinsser 1,2,3 is a great primer. You don't need to sand before using it, unless the wood is knackered. Two coats (2 hours apart) and then satinwood on top. If you are doing on top of oil based paint, you'll probably need two coats of satinwood too. Don't trust it saying one coat!!

SavingsQuestions · 21/03/2021 11:21

Thankyou 🥰. Now kids are back in school and partner still not back to full time we thought we'd give the house a go. We're lower income now but would make us all feel good if it felt brighter!

We're going for the dulux easy clean for the walls in the hallway and kitchen. Small house means wallls get touched all the time!

I have horrible raised wallpaper on one wall but where I took it off the other wall it could do with skimming so not doing that again (no money for it all!) Hoping some polyfiller and fresh paint will at least make it look fresher even if it isn't entirely flat!

SavingsQuestions · 21/03/2021 11:23

Malingering thats helpful. Was going to assume 2 coats. Happy to put the work in now to get it okay.

We have bannisters which we've never painted before... will l be fun!

My top tip would be to put a elastic band round the tin lengths ways so you wipe your brush off on hat and the drips fall in the tin rather than on the edge of the tin making the lid hard to get back on.
