What do you think should be general knowledge?

I have terrible general knowledge. Trivial Pursuits is hell and I completely fail to shout answers along to Mastermind.

I am going to try and improve this, but what is general knowledge?

Capitals of the world? Important dates? Former Prime Ministers?

Help me out, what do you know (in broad terms) that you think everyone should know?

Keeping up to date with current events, reading, having a range of different people to converse with, all help me. I say I know a little about a lot but not lots about any one thing. Broad general knowledge and a lifelong love of reading. I’m always surprised when I mention something significant that recently occurred in the news & people have never heard of it. I feel a need to be informed.

DH has fantastic general knowledge and fantastic random knowledge.

He's not a big reader (dyslexic) but has lots of varied interests and an extremely good memory. His main interests lie in history, archaeology, music, gardening and motorsport. And his memory for each of those areas make him an excellent quiz night team member!

I'm also interested in those things (except motorsport) but don't retain names very well which is an issue!

Roman and Greek mythology would be a good start. History too. But it is hard to be enthusiastic about things you're not interested in, so start with where they lie and go from there.

Critical thinking.

After someone recommended it on here, I started doing the Sporcle countries of the world quiz and I would actually recommend it to everyone. Now when I hear about something going on in the world I can picture where it is rather than just thinking "somewhere in the middle East" or whatever. I can't believe how little I knew about some parts of the world beforehand and it has piqued my interest to find out more.

I think it's sad that few people seem to know anything about the native trees, flowers, birds etc of the UK.

Similarly, basic geography of the British Isles - where towns and cities are, rivers etc.

Have a play on Sporcle. I am a lot more knowledgeable about countries, elements, US states, capitals, US presidents and Game of Thrones characters than I was before I started doing quizzes there. I’m not saying that’s useful...the one thing I just can’t retain is flags, if a flag quiz comes up I’m a loser before it even starts.
