My daughter is in first year in Uni in Edinburgh. We do not live in the UK and due to travel restrictions we haven't seen her since Christmas and will not see her until June at the earliest. It's her birthday at the end of March so I am trying to think of a present or selection of presents that I can sent her by post or get delivered to halls that will appeal to a 20 year old who is great fun and very sociable but also very environmentally aware and will only buy sustainable clothes, vegan cosmetics etc. I also am nervous re brexit charges. I ordered something on line recently which came through the UK and I had to pay €60 customs which I was only informed of when it was delivered! Budget would be approx £100.
So if you were a socailly and enviromentally conscious fun loving 20 year old uni student what would you love to get delivered to your door.

Where is she based? If you order online from local companies that will get brownie points and avoid extra charges

Palavah · 19/03/2021 08:28

Sorry just seen she's in Edinburgh. Statement above still applies - order online from. Co.uk companies. Search for things like vegan edinburgh, eco Edinburgh, wax wraps Edinburgh etc.

I've started using products from a company called Gruum. They are based in Manchester and I don't know if it's vegan but it's like shampoo bars and natural products, cruelty free, minimal waste, recyclable packaging etc. Might be nice to get a few pamper products

gemandjule · 19/03/2021 08:35

Great. I'll look up Gruum. Thanks for the suggestion, Anyone else know locally based ethical companies I could try. She loves quirky art, vegan cosmetics, cool stationary, vegan food and vintage clothes

You could also get her a ‘goodgift’ - which is a charitable donation with lots of different causes to choose from alongside physical presents. www.goodgifts.org/

Hfjshdhs · 19/03/2021 08:40

Deliciously Ella (vegan treats) do snacks through the post and have just launched an amazing vegan chocolate.

Ninkanink · 19/03/2021 08:42

Edinburgh Natural Skincare Company might have something nice!

Website here

gemandjule · 19/03/2021 08:42

kind-clothing.com could be an option? Ethically made and plastic-free packaging. I have some T-shirts from here and they're really good quality.

Sp1ke3 · 19/03/2021 08:47

What about a subscription to the Happy News?

londonmum789 · 19/03/2021 08:52

Considerit vegan doughnuts (they deliver). My daughter and her flat mates were delighted!

DoggyDoolittle · 19/03/2021 08:53

Anything you order from UK companies and get sent direct to your DD will not incur any customs charges, even if you're ordering / paying from abroad.
I sent DD a supermarket delivery of alcohol, mixers, crisps and party disposables (banners etc) for her birthday, i.e. sponsored a party for her and her flatmates. That went down very well (if it's cool mom brownie points you're after)!
If you want to get her something more lasting and personal how about some handmade jewellery? There are quite a few craftspeople who make lovely pendants and earrings with found sea-glass from Scottish beaches and recycled silver; have a Google or look on Etsy. Would be a unique and lifelong reminder of a birthday spent in unusual circumstances in Scotland.

Ninkanink · 19/03/2021 08:55

Oh I love the idea of handmade jewellery from a local seller!

JoMalones · 19/03/2021 08:55

I would also look at Etsy and Not on the High Street- you can search by location ans as pp say, you won't pay shipping

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 19/03/2021 08:56

Something from community clothing? I love them!

I have to go to work now but some great ideas. Thanks so much. I have already ordered from Gruum and Kind Clothing! The vegan doughnuts are next on my list and I love the idea of some jewellery made from seaglass! They spend quite a bit of time at weekends exploring the coast near Edinburgh.
A party delivery pack sounds great too but since she already has a disciplinary hearing relating to what she insists was a small group of her "bubble" next week I'd better try to avoid actively encouraging a party since I really don't want her to be homeless or kicked out of Uni! Really frustrating for them especially when some of her flatmates are travelling home all the time but that's another thread.

Lush are very good for cosmetics and bath products. They gave a vegan range and none of their products are tested on animals. I always sent my daughter a cake from a British company called Sponge. Good value, very tasty, delivered on time and have a vegan range.

eosmum · 19/03/2021 09:15

I have gorgeous hand cream bars from the Edinburgh natural skincare co. They had a stall in a market when we visited, they defo have a website. You can’t go wrong with snacks for students, especially vegan chocolate is very expensive.

Lessstressedhemum · 19/03/2021 09:20

Social Bite do letterbox vegan brownie boxes. Utterly delicious, environmentally secure and socially responsible all at the same time.

sausagerole · 19/03/2021 09:22

I second beeswax wraps for storing leftovers, wrapping jewellery for travel etc

Henneypenny7 · 19/03/2021 09:38

Milk cosmetics from cult beauty my niece raves about them I think there vegan

BrotherlyLove · 19/03/2021 09:38

Sniggering at your socially and environmentally conscious dc facing a disciplinary for breaking rules during pandemic Hmm

Whalewithnosnail · 19/03/2021 09:40

Here is a page of Edinburgh businesses which were operating during lockdown. (Scroll down on the page). I'm not.sure the page is being kept up to date but a good starting point.

Edinburgh Lockdown Economy

There are a good few vegan places now- Easter greens is an all vegan shop. And there are a couple of cafes- I can't think of the names- is go go beets maybe vegan? Also I think loads of businesses do vegan deliveries..I think bross bagels do a vegan box.

Hope that helps.
