Basic maths knowledge

Hi guys, just thinking I'd love to do a basic maths course. Homeschooling has taught me I'm useless at maths. I never liked it in school and now with calculators etc there doesn't seem to be a need to know the basics anymore. But I really want to be able to help my son with his maths and aside from that one of my new years resolutions is to learn a new skill so I figure I can combine the two. Any ideas where I can do something like that online. There's a lot coming up on Google but I'd love to hear any recommendations from you. Thanks

What level of Maths is your son at? My dcs' school uses HegartyMaths which goes up to GCSE.

Khan academy has a lot of good material

Loads of Youtubers doing primary maths to refresh the basics and teach the new methods.

Website called mathsisfun explains things really well and gives you practice tasks. It depends on your current level though, some of it may need to wait a while if you're pre GCSE ish.

When DD was at school they used to use MyMaths. I taught myself a lot of maths so that I could explain the concepts to DD. I somehow managed to relearn how to do surds, trigonometry and quadratic equations plus various other mathematical functions, having last done them over 30 years previously.

And now I have forgoten how to do them again Grin

Thanks for all your suggestions ill get looking into them.
My son is only 11 and to be fair he's pretty good but homeschooling made me realise how awful I am and it made me think I should do something about it. I'm quite excited now....I know I need to get a life Grin

The adult learning 'bit' local authority where I live offers courses and have free resources in numeracy for people that struggle with it. Might be worth asking if yours has similar?

The OU has some free courses - there is a basic Maths one - I found it really helpful- back to basics - they do level 1 and level 2 - aimed at adults to brush up their skills .

Have a look at BBC bitesize online. Lots of good stuff on there

I’d love to do a course too as I’m not great at maths, although last year I found a wonderful YouTube video which helped me to learn all about trigonometry again, which I’d last done 35 years ago. Helped me to then explain it to DS and he actually did ‘get it’ from my explanation and went on to answer the rest of the questions, proud moment there Grin

I’ve forgotten it all again though and that’s where my problem with maths lies, I don’t do it often enough to help make it ‘stick’.

Lots of great online resources out there but just to say I also found Carol Vodermans book a helpful aide to have to hand when helping dd1 with her maths during lockdown.

I quite enjoy maths. I was ok at it at school but struggled to get a decent grade at A level and always think that now I'm older and a bit more methodical/logical, that I would get a better grade. (I think the same about Chemistry - gave it up as soon as I could but now think I would enjoy it!)

Good luck.

Mathsfactor website is structured in sessions that build on your knowledge. We found it incredibly helpful

Khan Academy. I have been using it for years since my dc was in ks1. I was quite bad at maths, but now I can help my dc with secondary maths easily.
It's not just great for maths. English grammar is also great, as well as computing and science.
