Has anyone had an Oddbox delivery?

I know this isn't the most thrilling of topics but I saw an advert for Oddbox today...... wonky fruit and veg refused by supermarkets delivered to your door. I like the sound of trying to reduce food waste and wonder if it would get us eating more fresh vegetables. Does anyone have any feedback if they have used them before?

Supermarkets where I shop are selling the wonky stuff, and I buy it. Wondering just how wonky the Oddbox stuff is, or if it is the same as the supermarket Wonky.

Interested in Oddbox now, if the delivery cost doesn't make it too pricey.

I thought it was rubbish - it wasn't stuff I would have/ wanted to buy from the supermarket. Not because it was wonky, but because I didn't want loads (and loads) of tiny apples, oranges that were tough to peel and mushrooms that seemed to go mouldy as soon as they were removed from the box.

I'm not convinced that the box is any better for the environment either. It's surely better to buy the products you want and then make sure you actually use them, rather than substandard produce go to waste.

It's probably a very good money spinner, as the boxes aren't cheap considering it's supposedly stuff that would otherwise go to waste!

Can’t get it at my (close to london) postcode, but i did get a couple of boxes from a friend to try out and they were excellent - really good mix (i got the large fruit + veg) and their “cosmetic” problems mostly weren’t visible to the naked eye.
I also tried a regular veg box and you got over twice as much in the oddbox for the same price.
Just waiting for them to expand to my postcode now!

Oh that's interesting to hear! I think the smallest box is about £13 delivered either weekly or every other week and had 6 or 7 veg and 3 types of fruit.... I agree though if it's all potatoes and apples that's not great value!

We absolutely love it and think it's great. Really tasty and fresh. Deffo gets us eating more fruit and veg and I enjoy the creativity of using stuff I wouldn't necessarily usually buy. (E.g. a celeriac the other day).

UnaOfStormhold · 18/03/2021 17:54

I've had one for a few weeks now - lots of the fruit and veg is surplus rather than having anything wrong, and I have been generally pleased with the quality and quantity. It does take a bit of planning to use it all but the flip side is that we're eating a more varied diet. You can choose 3 items to exclude if there's anything you wouldn't use and see what is coming before you commit to the delivery. Overall definitely worth a try.

1plus3plus1 · 18/03/2021 18:01

I love it too - plenty of "non-boring" fruit and veg due to surplus. We've had blueberries, melons, pineapples, avocados, kiwis. Rainbow carrots and purple potatoes fascinated the kids too!
Definitely made us up our fruit and veg consumption, and try different recipes.

I think that's my main attraction to it, I do a weekly shop so lots of fruit and veg doesn't last the week and I end up relying on tinned and frozen. If I do a top up shop I end up overspending and coming out with more than I need so I was hoping that a delivery box would stop me overspending plus up our fresh fruit and veg intake and maybe inspire us to try some new things. Sounds like it may be worth a try at least.

We've been getting it for over a year and love it. Obviously you have to be flexible and willing to eat whatever you're given, as with any veg box. We're quite keen cooks and not fussy so it works well for us. In fact I like not having to plan what to buy! We much prefer oddbox to Abel & Cole (overpriced) and Riverford (not enough variety).

Ktay · 18/03/2021 19:29

I’ve gone back to it since they introduced the option of excluding 3 things - it did get a bit boring last winter with all the swede and cabbage. I think it’s great value and it’s got the DDs eating more fruit. Anything that doesn’t appeal, I just pass on through the Olio food sharing app so no waste and we still get our money’s worth. I just get one medium fruit and veg box a fortnight and top up with things I want elsewhere. You can see what’s going to be in the boxes each week and switch to a more suitable one for your needs.

tumtitum · 18/03/2021 19:37

We get it and are mainly happy with it. Sometimes things aren't as fresh as I like but generally it is enough! We are a family of four and get a large box of fruit and veg every fortnight. I get a few bits from the supermarket still as my kids will only eat certain veg!

carnyvahr · 18/03/2021 19:46

We had a mixed experience. I'm not currently getting boxes, but I have on and off and may well give them a try again.

IMO ....

Pros: get to try out interesting new items; often very generous and good value for money; easy to manage account online; good customer service; often fresh and good quality

Cons:occasionally quite sparse, or not fresh items (not often, but often enough to feel it's not consistently good); receive +++ of the same item and not a great deal of variety in some boxes.

Bravobravobravo · 18/03/2021 19:59

I love our oddbox- quality and variety is good and really gets us trying new things and eating more veg. They have a referral where you get £10 off your first box and I get a £10 discount- I have pm’d you @CarolinaWeeper, if anyone else wants the code send me a pm.
