Any Americans who would like to chat snacks with me?

A friend of mine who lives in California is goi g through a rough time and I wanted to make him up a little UK snack/treat package to send over.

So far I have tea bags and some Cadbury Easter bits.

What can't you get in CA that I could send to make him smile?

Nairns gluten free biscuits
Biscoff Lotus biscuits, oat and chocolate chip

Toilenstripes · 18/03/2021 17:31

Sorry, the Nairns are oat and chocolate chip

Happytentoes · 18/03/2021 17:32

Minstrels. I used to hand carry them by the bucket load when I worked in the US.

laughoutquiet · 18/03/2021 17:52

My US friends love getting crisps like skips, whotsits, prawn cocktail walkers..

Fivemoreminutes1 · 18/03/2021 17:53

A box of Maltesers
HP sauce
Percy Pigs
Custard creams
Kipling mini battenburg
Colman’s mustard powder
Tunnocks tea cakes

onemouseplace · 18/03/2021 17:55

Hula Hoops.

RubyFakeLips · 18/03/2021 18:01

My brother is is the US and always wants:

Cider
Brown Sauce
Worcester Sauce
Proper biscuits like Hob Nobs and Bourbons
Jaffa Cakes
Tunnocks Tea Cakes
Crisps (as above) but would also add Mini Cheddar and Monster Munch.

He would also like me to send butter, cream and M&S raspberry iced fingers but don’t think they would be nice by the time they got there!

ShaunaTheSheep · 18/03/2021 18:02

Dark chocolate bounty bars

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 18/03/2021 18:28

It's hard to get big Easter eggs here. OTOH they cost a lot to post.

Thornton's chocs and toffees are always a huge hit when we receive them.

I smiled at the suggestion of Biscoff biscuits - I've just finished a pack that I got in Trader Joes.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 18/03/2021 18:34

No suggestions but did want to say what a lovey friend you are, OP.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/03/2021 18:37

There’s loads of YouTube vids about Americans testing U.K. snacks.

Malteasers were popular

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/03/2021 18:39

And l think Mcvities choc biscuits were on there too.

JingsMahBucket · 18/03/2021 18:41

Is he British or American @MrsWP?

minniemoocher · 18/03/2021 18:42

If he's in CA most of these things are easily available as trader joes has lots of British foods (owned by Aldi), we used to have chocolate buttons and gravy granules sent to us though as you couldn't get the former and the later was only available as powder. Double check customs for ca as they are far stricter than most states, you can't even bring food in from OR!

JingsMahBucket · 18/03/2021 18:43

That said, milk chocolate hobnobs are always welcome. Not M & S’ version though!

Oh gosh thanks for the warning! I'll make sure to check.

Bombay or balti mix! My parents always want bags and bags of it when they visit. Plus chocolate, even simple ones like dairy milk are way better than what's available at corner shops etc there.

MissConductUS · 18/03/2021 19:45

I'm an American who is always happy to talk about snacks, but it sounds like you want to pick out things that a Brit ex-pat would miss from the UK.

I'm in New York and I was surprised how many British items I found in the supermarket when I looked for them. There are also a few websites like this one:

britishfooddepot.com/

Ninetyseventhirtyfive · 18/03/2021 20:41

Maltesers!
Hot cross buns - though I guess they may not survive Smile
Penguin type biscuits
Mr Kipling-type cake slices (most packaged cake here is just way too sweet and sickly)
Cheese and onion crisps
Easter eggs - they mostly only sell small eggs / mini eggs here
Custard creams / bourbons / hob nobs

Ninetyseventhirtyfive · 18/03/2021 20:43

Custard powder!

MrsWP · 19/03/2021 06:46

@MissConductUS

He's not an ex Pat.

Has visited London on vacation a couple of time but that's all.

I'm looking to send stuff he's never heard of or tried.
