What can cause female baldness?

Hi all ,

For the past few years my head has been balding on the sides of my scalp. It started out small but now it has got so bad it’s very noticeable even when my hair is tied loosely.

I have been stressed with personal stuff that is happening in my life but I’m worried what would cause me to become bald on the sides of my head?

I’m 24 , female , and have been fairly okay in my physical health through out life until now , I’m going to call my gp tomorrow , hand hold please x

Apologies for it being from cosmo but the NHS article talks about the frequency of hair loss in the over 70’s

@Saltyslug I’m not on the pill ,I recently came off the implant but it had been getting bad even while I was on the implant

And I could have low iron as I’ve had it before

@Feelingconfusedtonight thank you for your kind words and hand hold , I appreciate it and I’ll definitely read the article you sent , as it might give me some answers x

Low iron and Vitamin D made me lose hair.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 18/03/2021 08:25

could it be genetics?
i know someone who is a bit bald and her dd, mid 30s is the same.

KarensChoppyBob · 18/03/2021 08:34

Do you wear hair extensions? My BF started developing bald patches from the traction after a few months, not the effect she was after.

Kpo58 · 18/03/2021 08:35

Some people get some baldness because they have their hair tied back really tightly. I think some geisha get it because if that.

Lessstressedhemum · 18/03/2021 09:24

Vitamin D deficiency can cause really bad balding. So can stress, anaemia and certain medications - citalopram made my DD lose hair by the handful.

Honeyglowx · 18/03/2021 20:16

Thank you all for your replies and it possibly could be genetics as I’ve had female family members have thinning hair too and I have worn hair extensions often if I’m being honest, I’ve now stopped it seeing how bad my scalp has gotten and will not be returning to them any time soon.

@Kpo58 and I’ve heard of that I think I will definitely make sure my hair is fairly loose when tied up because I tie up every day for work and because I don’t like it constantly getting in my face when I’m at home or go out

@Lessstressedhemum and it could be one of those things or a number of them tbh but I didn’t realise medications such as citalopram could cause hair loss , I guess there can be a lot of things that can cause hair loss/baldness unfortunately 😞

Lupus and other autoimmune conditions...?

Low oestrogen.

JustAddCoffee91 · 18/03/2021 20:48

Hey op I had something similar a few years ago, I went to the gp and blood work showed I had very low progesterone, I was having fertility issues at the time too and the low progesterone caused a hormone imbalance

Saltyslug · 19/03/2021 06:42

The pill can cause baldness.

subbysammiexoxo · 19/03/2021 06:44

you sound like someone who's on my facebook page, I would see a doctor, but the person in question is always in denial despite having terrible health x

PolarnOPirate · 19/03/2021 06:45

Fibrosing alopecia, alopecia, vitamin deficiencies, other autoimmune conditions. Hopefully something simple for you op! Flowers

Charles11 · 19/03/2021 06:46

A vitamin b deficiency caused hair loss in a friend of mine at that age. Sorry, I can’t tell you which one but it all grew back when she took supplements in her drs advice. Have you spoken to a gp?

Magicbabywaves · 19/03/2021 06:46

The pill, coming off the pill and low iron made my hair thin for a while.

Saltyslug · 19/03/2021 06:48

Ask your GP for a full blood test. Iron needs to be over 40 or 70 for hair I think but 11 ish is seen as ok health wise by the nhs. You might need to ask for a print out of your results

JE17 · 19/03/2021 06:52

My hair became very thin and I had several bald patches. Blood tests showed it was a thyroid problem. Once I was on the correct dose of medication, my hair was almost back to normal.

Twizbe · 19/03/2021 06:57

Both my husband and mother in law have alopecia universalis. They have both lost all their hair including eye lashes, eyebrows, body hair etc.

No idea what sparked it for my husband, but MiL seems to have been around major hormone changes. Her hair has come and gone over the years but since having her second child it's just gone for good.

Definitely see a doctor to check iron levels and general health check.

Alopecia Uk have some great resources on their website and places for support.
