Aeropress questions.....

CimCardashian · 17/03/2021 21:05

Evening all.

My mini cafetière has broken, thinking about replacing with an aeropress.

I drink black coffee... but not espresso. Is that possible to make with the aeropress or does it just make espresso then I’d have to top up with hot water?

Also,I buy Taylor’s ground coffee, happy to buy beans and grind if that’s the best idea.

Any other wisdom gratefully received!

I make black coffee in mine! For espresso you just out in less water.
I also use Taylor's ground in it and it is fine!
Push down slowly and carefully!

Perfect timing! I’ve been considering the same thing too.

Why not get a filter machine? You can adjust the strength to however you like it with the amount of coffee and water you use. They often have a keep warm function and are pretty inexpensive to buy. We have an aeropress, cafetiere, nespresso machine and filter machine and it's the filter machine that we use almost exclusively.

I love my aero press. It makes great black coffee - if you fill the tube all the way up with water it’s about 1 medium mug’s worth. I tend to use a big tablespoon coffee, add the water, fit the plunger in the top and then pull it up slightly to make a vacuum. These keeps the water in the tube brewing rather than falling straight through.

Taylors grounds are fine. I brought an electric grinder for a fiver in a charity shop for occasional whole beans, no need for wanky kit. Beard and checked shirt are also optional.

The best thing is when you have made the coffee, you hold it over the bin, twist off the end and press a neat little disc of grounds into the bin. No faffy cleaning like a cafetière. UNLESS you are showing someone else how clever it is, then the grounds will go all over your foot instead.

The instructions say that you might struggle with the plunger if you have weak delicate lady wrists (paraphrasing). This is absolute bollocks but also an excuse to delegate the morning coffee to a DP if you think you can get away with it.

Yes, I just add extra water to ours. It’s so much quicker and easier to clean than a cafetière or moka pot, I love it! Ground coffee will be fine, however quite a few of our local coffee places offer an ‘aero press grind’ so we tend to use that now.

Love our aeropress! I have one at home and one at work now. Really easy to make black coffee just use more water. Finer ground coffee is better - but you can make with normal shop bought.

Another vote for Aeropress. It makes good coffee whether you want espresso, long black or like milky coffee. Over time you occasionally need to replace the rubber plunger but otherwise they're pretty well indestructible.

Love our aeropress, makes great coffee and so much easier than cafetière to clean.
If you do get one store it separately so you don’t misshape the plunger.

@Reallybadidea we have a filter machine in the loft which comes on at 7am 😀. But we need something for downstairs and it’s only me that will use it and don’t want anything else on my surfaces. Agreed it makes a nice cup tho!

@TheLadyGrayson I had no idea some places sell an aeropress blend,I’ll look out for that once I’m out and about more.
