Do you live near a church with an hourly bell ring?

Hi,
We are thinking about moving house and found a lovely property in a near by village. The house is around 300m from the church and I did hear the bell ring at around 4:00pm on a visit, so I'm assuming it's an hourly ring.

I've email the church contact to ask for a schedule of the bell ringing and wanted to ask for anyone's experience of living within hearing distance.

Did it annoy you at weekends, nights? Do you just get used to it and not really hear it through today's double glazing?

Any input appreciated, it's a lovely property and I don't want this to be a negative.
Thanks

I grew up opposite a church with a bell that rings on the hour. The Sunday morning ringing which went on for about a year twenty minutes was a pita as a hungover teenager but other than that I never noticed.
Bonus: we never needed clocks

I lived opposite a church for several years, with single glazing. The bell rang every hour including thru the night. Within 2 weeks of moving there i slept through it, and it was actually quite nice if I did ever happen to be awake in the night (not bell related) that I'd know what time it was. I quite miss hearing the clock go each hour as I went about my day and always roughly knowing the time.

weemouse · 17/03/2021 21:15

Ok so pretty positive experiences.

SameToo yes I asked for a schedule Blush I just wanted to know if it chimes at night Blush hopefully they won't think I'm too much of a twat Grin

I think I'll pop by a couple of times a day and "test" it again for how loud it is

So glad to hear many of you just don't even notice it now and enjoy it.

Not sure I'd sleep through the night with it, I'm a really light sleeper

I like it. The email for a schedule made me laugh GrinGrin

I live next to one that rings every 15 minutes! I love it and miss it when I'm away. I find it comforting.

IReallyNeedMoreGin · 17/03/2021 21:18

I used to live right next door to one. My back wall was the boundary of the church. You get used to it very very quickly! Never bothered me at all! Quite liked it.

MiaowMiaow99 · 17/03/2021 21:18

Every 15 mins. It's a great little time check as it's consciously in the background.

allycat4 · 17/03/2021 21:19

Sorry to be the negative one, but we lived near one when I was in my teens abs I found it really stressful on nights I couldn't sleep - didn't help being reminded of the time every time the clock struck through the night!

Mumsnut · 17/03/2021 21:19

Ours rings every quarter of an hour.

At 1am, 5am and 9am, it plays a tune - really. There is a carillon after the European fashion. On Tuesdays, for example, it plays ‘Home Sweet Home’

I no longer notice

Usagi12 · 17/03/2021 21:19

I lived near one for years, it never bothered me and was always a lovely sound. I don't remember it ever bothering me and I miss it now.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 17/03/2021 21:20

If you're listening out for it you'll hear it.

We live up the hill from the church, probably takes a few minutes to walk to it, and the only time I've heard it is at night when I'm outside (I don't hear it at all during the day) and even then it's just a distant sound.

They do bell ringing occasionally but again it's not something I've ever really noticed, especially when I'm in the house.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/03/2021 21:22

You won’t hear it after a while. We moved into a flat and thought ‘oh there’s a lovely convent just across the square’. Next morning as silly o’clock 🔔 🔔 🔔. Every morning - funnily w light slightly later on a Sunday - early bells. We didn’t hear it after a while.

Where i was brought up we were in the centre of a triangle of 3 churches - all had bells going off every 15 mins something was clanging. The first time my sister brought her new husband over to stay 6am the first morning we heard a wail “oh my god, is it a million o clock or have we been invaded???”

So - bells ok after the first few days

Tamingofthehamster · 17/03/2021 21:23

Never bothered me. I used to quite like it if I was awake in the night as I could tell the time without switching the light on.

LubaLuca · 17/03/2021 21:24

We're about 100m from the church bell tower, and it rings every 15 minutes. I only hear it when I'm in the garden. I can't hear it at all inside the house, even in the dead of night.

Tangledtresses · 17/03/2021 21:24

They've stopped doing the bells on the weekends and I really miss it

noideabutstilltrying · 17/03/2021 21:25

I live opposite a church that rings on the hour. Only have single glazing and don't notice it at all.

In the summer I have the windows open and am still not disturbed by it.

en0la · 17/03/2021 21:25

Yes, it was fine. When we moved I couldn't sleep because the silence was unnerving.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 17/03/2021 21:26

Churches and the Town hall clock here.

Don't notice them at all.

I do miss hearing the Minster bellringing, though.

MirandaMarple · 17/03/2021 21:28

I've just checked and the bell ringing church in my village is 365ft away. It never occurred to me that there might be bell ringing when I bought my house (10 months ago)

It rings hourly and sometimes on the quarter of an hour (I think?) but I never hear it during the daytime. I hear it often during the night but swear it misses a bell sometimes (I check the clock)

Genuine question - could the wind make the sound travel away, so that's why when it's 3am it only rings twice?! Or I was fast asleep on the first bell...

It confuses me often. On a Sunday day there is a constant bell ringing for a period of time (before service?)

Ultimately it doesn't bother me at all (apart from it trying to confuse me)

Easterbunnygettingready · 17/03/2021 21:28

Every 15 mins here...
Shock

Effic · 17/03/2021 21:29

I moved into a house right opposite a church with half hourly bells. Never even occurred to me to check as, for some bizarre reason, I thought they’d turn them off or something at night!!
First night was a shock and I was awake all night and in tears at the thought of living next to it.
By day three I’d stopped noticing .... it’s bizarre .... but somehow you do just stop noticing. I would swear to you, hand in heart, that there has been no bells tonight but I know there has been and because it’s 9.27 if I concentrate really hard I’ll hear the 9.30 bell. If I don’t actually concentrate on it though, I know I won’t!

PatsyJStone · 17/03/2021 21:29

Used to and sometimes I heard and other times I didn’t notice. Didn’t bother me at all, quite liked it.

en0la · 17/03/2021 21:30

I think you live where I used to live 😁 does it also have Loch Lomond and the Eton boat song in the repertoire?
mrwalkensir · 17/03/2021 21:31

friend lives next door to a church that is lucky enough to have a full peal (is sometimes on radio 3) . Not during lockdown sadly. Have rung her and commented "is that the bells" when they're practicing and she's replied "oh yes, hadn't noticed them". Enjoy...

HelloCanYouHearMe · 17/03/2021 21:31

I only notice the bells when the windows are open - doesnt bother me and I quite like listening to them ring when there has been a wedding
