It’s a bizarre request, particularly to say it won’t be returned. The company doesn’t sound very reputable.

Solicitors - or the post office or anyone else -are not allowed to certify a copy of a birth certificate. It’s a breach of crown copyright and is unlawful. Not all solicitors know this.

Get a copy of it certified by a solicitor. We’ve used these for work visas etc.

Fascinating - I had no idea. And neither have several solicitors I’ve paid for certifying birth certificates!

We had to get copies of DC birth certificates certified by the police in another country, and before I could stop him the police officer stamped ‘this is a copy’ on DC’s original birth certificate Grin

That’s not great that solicitors seem to be routinely doing this. It’s clearly not allowed www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/information-management/reproduction-of-birth-death-marriage-certificates.pdf

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 18/03/2021 10:24

That guidance doesn't prevent you having a copy certified for ID proof purposes as far as I can see, or am reading it wrongly?

DifficultBloodyWoman · 18/03/2021 10:35

May I ask which Asian country it is?

It is standard practice to send copies of documents for visa purposes via email. Some countries then require to bring the originals with you for inspection upon arrival. They usually need them to be apostilled first (done through the government’s Legalisation Office in London or Milton Keynes).

Personally, I have never been asked for my birth certificate, usually a passport is sufficient. I wonder if it might be an English teaching job in which case birthplace may indicate whether or not you were born in the U.K. or immigrated later? However, that is listed on your passport anyway so not really needed.

If it were me, I would say no. Original documents do not leave my possession unless absolutely essential (this is more important overseas than in the U.K.). I can’t see a reasonable need for a birth certificate for an overseas job so I would be thinking SCAM!

lilyfire · 18/03/2021 10:49

Istand - 2.4 of the guidance does clearly say you mustn’t produce copies as evidence of an event even where certified by a solicitor etc.
Really all the scenarios where someone is asking a solicitor to certify will be because they want to show evidence of the event.
I’m a notary and we are taught that we must obtain a copy from the GRO. We can notarise such an original as being from the GRO but not a photocopy.

Ok, I’ve found conflicting requirements online. Some need it, some don’t. is is EPIK or a hagwon? I’d trust EPIK more but still be concerned.

The best place to ask this question would be www.eslcafe.com on the Kores boards.

Good luck to your DD.

I would never send my birth certificate away for an overseas job. I mean what can it do? If it was my vacuum, fair play. I could rent it out though the shipping costs might be a bit prohibitive. But an A4 piece of paper? I don't think there is much calling there other than as a 'paper aeroplane' but I don't think vacancies for that come up very often.

BrilliantBetty · 18/03/2021 20:59

No, sorry but there are too many crooks out there.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 18/03/2021 23:22

thank you @DifficultBloodyWoman

I don't understand- just send it or get a copy from the registry and send that. I've often had yo send 'original' copies of birth, death, marriage certificates for various reasons. It's no big deal.
